Going to talk to somebody about relationships, emotions, and feelings can be new territory for some. It’s hard to share our most private thoughts and experiences with people we don’t know. Hello. I’m Karen Burnham, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I assist children, teens, and adults to find their full potential. I help clients who are facing hurdles like anxiety, sadness, anger, and trauma that have caused stress and frustration. I support them in uncovering patterns and gaining skills so they can begin to have more control and enjoy successes.

You just finished another day and you feel yourself riddled with anxiety. You've had anxiety in the past, but now it seems unbearable. It's hard to breath and concentrate, especially when you are wondering when the "next ball is going to drop". Family, friends, and colleagues are talking to you, but all you hear are words because you're already many steps ahead of them in thought. You've heard that you just need to be "more present, less anxious". But you don't know how, or even where to begin. It feels as if the weight of the world is on your shoulders. Sometimes you know why you're anxious, other times you have no idea.

My goal as a therapist is to find solutions that work for you on an individual basis, helping you to discover the true potential of your life. There may be no magic button or quick-fix solution when it comes to changing things from the past that have been difficult. What we can do is work together to find understanding and resolution in the difficult areas of your life and in the challenges you have to face. I have experience with people who are struggling with depression, anxiety, sexual and gender identity issues, academic difficulties, and interpersonal relationships. I use cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and relational therapy, I work to help both adolescents and adults improve their lives.

My focus is on adult patients with trauma, family systems, anxiety, depression, addictions, personality disorders and/or emotional dysregulation. More recently in my career, I focus on emotional abuse, domestic abuse, dysfunctional family dynamics and recovery for both clients and other professionals. I specialize in attachment therapy and work with children, families, and adults interested in processing their childhood trauma. I have extensive training and experience in adoption and trauma. I see children together with their parent to build trust and connection, provide parent coaching, and support each family member to foster a healthy family dynamic. Complex trauma, relational trauma, Reactive Attachment Disorder, PTSD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, ADHD and challenging behaviors are common presenting issues.
