I provide contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy, focusing on individuals grappling with anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges, and with an emphasis on queer, trans and non-binary experiences. My approach integrates a keen understanding of queer and gender issues, recognizing the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in these contexts. I believe that our psychological symptoms are deeply connected to our early experiences, family histories, and the broader societal systems we inhabit, including those related to race and gender identity, class, and sexual orientation. I also offer EMDR for trauma and phobias.

The unique relationship we develop will be specific to your individual needs.
Do you ever feel overwhelmed caring for your children, ill spouse, elderly parents or others? When caretaking responsibilities demand so much time and energy, do you sometimes feel you've lost part of yourself? Perhaps you're afraid you are going to lose someone you love. Do you feel you must sacrifice yourself in order to have relationships leaving you wondering where you end and others begin? Can you only really be yourself when alone? Do you feel guilty or ashamed for resenting your situation? If you can relate to any of these difficulties, I can help.

I have been in practice for over 10 years, helping clients to explore and resolve relationship issues, as well as anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction. My work is client-centered, which attempts to tailor the therapeutic approach to the needs of the client. I incorporate Cognitive-Behavioral techniques, Mindfulness Practice, Narrative Therapy and Attachment Theory, which looks at the ways in which childhood experiences may affect one's relationship to self and others.

I bring warmth, intuition, and compassion into the counseling relationship and the encouragement of free, authentic expression through experientially-oriented sessions that are "beyond talk therapy.
I hold a deep and abiding belief in the inherent health and wellness in each of my clients and my work is to guide them to rediscover this core sense of aliveness, agency and resiliency. In addition to my clinical training in psychology, I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and Mindfulness Educator. I have integrated traditional psychotherapy with cutting-edge, body-based modalities that address childhood developmental issues and Complex Trauma. I create a safe environment in which to renegotiate learned survival strategies that, while needed at one time, compromise our ability to connect with ourselves and others.

As clients do this work, they experience greater aliveness and creativity, and their relationship with self and others become expansive and more meaningful.
I am passionate about my work as a therapist. I frequently feel honored and humbled to facilitate and witness another's healing process. I sense we are trying to navigate our way the best we know how, and sometimes, when we get stuck, we need support from a fellow pilgrim. I am grateful to have been the beneficiary of therapy when grappling with my own inner turmoil and difficult relationships. If you too are looking for less suffering and anxiety, more fulfilling relationships, and a deeper sense of what you truly want, I would be excited and privileged to support you in your journey.

We work best with military, veterans, first responders and those "raging against the dying of the light" to work with both the individual and their partners relationship in group settings. Being a 12-Year Military Veteran and First Responder we understand how the military community prides itself on its closeness and camaraderie — its strength in numbers. But Veterans transitioning into civilian life after military service may be surprised to find themselves without the system of support that they have come to know and rely on. This thing we do so others may live, love, work and play well. Joe Whitcomb, PsyDc, LMFT AF Veteran

Do you feel stuck? Many people begin psychotherapy because they feel something is "off". They are dissatisfied, but unclear about what they want; they feel that "something is missing," but they're not sure what it is. Others begin psychotherapy because they find themselves repeatedly cycling through unhealthy relationship patterns and they want to change. Additionally, we all have traumas and woundings within us, to varying degrees. Psychotherapy can help untangle these knots and move you through suffering and pain towards greater health, integration, wholeness, vitality, and well-being.

I work with my clients to deeply discover and access new resources and potentials of "self at best" both for growth and as ways beyond obstacles. I believe the quality of the relationship between the therapist and client is essential for change. I have over 17 years of spiritual practice which I incorporate using mindfulness, inquiry and dream work.

Everyone encounters some psychological stress. It doesn't have to be dramatic or pathological to have a major impact on the quality of your life. Sometimes, a difficult relationship can throw you off center. The far reaching effects of interpersonal conflict cannot be underestimated. To break unhealthy patterns, it's often necessary to seek help. At other times, you may face an existential crisis, searching for meaning and inner truth. Many high functioning clients suffer from Imposter Syndrome and want to understand why having it all doesn't add up to happiness. A stint of therapy can shed healing light on the mystery of life.

I want to support you in your journey of self discovery and healing by using not only the things I learned in school, but also by showing up authentically with compassion, empathy, understanding, and acceptance, and developing an honest and secure therapeutic relationship, so that you can recognize the patterns and beliefs that are no longer serving you.
Are you struggling to untangle the environment or beliefs you grew up with and your your current identity, or who you want to be in life? Have you experienced religious trauma which has made you question if who you are, or your life choices are "bad?" My goal is to help you unpack what you have been taught to believe, and integrate it with who you are as an individual, and how you want to live your life. We will work together to help you see new perspectives about yourself and your circumstances, and bring the unconscious beliefs that are holding you back to light, in order to enable you to live more freely and authentically.

Don't wait any longer to feel more at home in your relationship or in your body.
EATING - Perhaps you tried many things, and you still don’t feel at home with your body or food. Though you are strong in many ways, you may even feel you have failed in this area. You didn’t fail! The information you were given failed you. I am both a fully-recovered bulimic and a scholar on the non-diet mentality. Come learn a new way of relating to your body and food - for good. My training is based in a combination of psychodynamic and experiential psychotherapy. My emphasis is to facilitate a therapeutic relationship where vulnerable feelings can be safely expressed. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, addiction... can be seen as invitations from the psyche to explore our internal world with understanding and compassion. Psychotherapy provides a safe place for this internal exploration within a caring relationship of respect.

Relationship Issues Therapists
While need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship starts to form in infancy, in a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant's needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they are theorized to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. The end of a relationship, however, is often a source of great psychological anguish.
