Life inevitably challenges our ability to stay balanced and centered throughout our day to day existence. The process of therapy and the journey of self-discovery in a supportive environment can help untangle confusing thoughts, feelings, and behavioral patterns that seem to be keeping you stuck. Whether you have feelings of depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, or a challenging life transition, I will collaborate with you to help you find clarity.

I value building a safe, comfortable and collaborative working relationship with my clients.
Welcome to my practice! I was an ICU and ER nurse for many years before becoming a psychologist, and this experience gave me a unique understanding of the important role that healthy emotional functioning plays in our physical well-being and relationships. I specialize in the treatment of adults struggling with anxiety, heightened stress, grief, and interpersonal conflicts/crises. If attempts to resolve a personal problem have been unsuccessful or if conflicts in your relationship are ongoing, I seek to provide the personal support, insight and guidance needed to find a positive resolution, and the skills needed to live a healthier, more satisfying life.

I have found that when there is even a thread of commitment in the marriage or relationship, there is hope for a restored and rewarding life together.
Serving Maryland and New Jersey. As a Pastor for over 35 years, I can merge a spirituality with my clinical approach to therapy for those who wish it. For men who want to be free from compulsive sexual behaviors I use a blend of clinical and biblical principles and have seen many freed from decades of addiction. This is also true for marriages that have been broken due to infidelity, pornography, and sexual practices that are not agreed upon within the marriage. Working successfully to stop the unwanted behavior and develop appropriate coping skills, communication and restored trust, is very rewarding and satisfying.

My focus, training, and expertise have evolved into seeing couples and individuals dealing with relationship issues. This started off in 2016, when I became a certified Gottman therapist (CGT). I was excited to become more involved the Gottman Institute starting with as a rover for the Art and Science of Love Weekend Workshop for Couples led by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. This led to me facilitating these same workshops for couples in Maryland with a fellow CGT, which led to training therapists the Gottman method of couples therapy (levels 1 & 2). Now, I am devoted to becoming a leader in couples therapy/workshops & training.

I work collaboratively with distressed couple to explore and identify the negative patterns that create emotional distress, isolation and pain in the relationship.
I specialize in helping couples understand and improve their distressed relationships. Distressed relationships are characterized by recurrent negative patterns of interaction and conflict that create emotional distance, misunderstanding, frustration and pain. Partners are often left feeling alone, isolated and hopeless as a result of these negative interactional patterns. Many distressed couples do not feel secure, protected or cared for in their relationships when these negative patterns take over. If you or your partner can relate to this type of relationship distress, consider contacting me for a consultation.

Therapy should take place in a relaxed, mutually respectful professional relationship.
To Schedule An Initial Appointment, Please E-Mail. I'm an experienced individual psychotherapist, having worked in numerous outpatient and inpatient settings. I've been in private practice for many years now, and believe a therapist needs to have a sound practical understanding of human behavior and psychological difficulties. Therapy is about understanding one's life, problem symptoms and causes, and working towards greater health. I work with patients of all ages. I'm also familiar with the unique issues often relevant to men's development and treatment.

Selecting a therapist is an important decision. I believe that creating an environment where the client feels that the therapist has listened, shown empathy, and has genuine concern are some of the core conditions for a therapeutic relationship. Providing a client with helpful feedback in this safe, empathic environment promotes change and growth. A client that I work with may have a variety of concerns including having a relationship issue, going through a separation, having parenting concerns, experiencing depression, anxiety, or problems related to alcohol or drug misuse or abuse. Please visit my website www.scottholzmanphd.com.

Relationship Issues Therapists
While need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that the ability to form a stable relationship starts to form in infancy, in a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably meets the infant's needs for food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation, and social contact. Such relationships are not destiny, but they are theorized to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. The end of a relationship, however, is often a source of great psychological anguish.
