I treat adults and older teens with presenting concerns of depression, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, relational problems, and grief.
Seeking therapy takes immense strength and courage. It can feel vulnerable to trust another human with your struggles, fear, and pain. From the beginning, I will do my best to listen deeply and carefully, respecting that you have been doing the best you can with what you’ve been handed in life. I believe that our symptoms often provide information about how we have had to adapt to our circumstances. I therefore strive to honor how you have had to cope while working towards alleviating your distress and deepening your connection with yourself and others.

If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, when? (Hillel, 2000 years ago). I'm not content with you feeling accepted and supported. I want you to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to live congruently with your personal values and not with fear of judgment or failure. I want you to be able to nurture and comfort yourself, but also to motivate and push yourself to act in your own best interests. l want you to attach yourself to something greater than yourself and to lessen the time you spend worrying about the future or reliving the past.

Couples come to therapy often feeling frustrated, defensive, hurt and angry. Love, attraction and shared life goals may have brought them together, but along the way to deeper emotional intimacy couples meet roadblocks. Growing self-awareness and curiosity about their partner helps them appreciate their differences as enriching rather than threatening. Partners realize that each of them has a role in cultivating the quality of their relationship. Partners learn to support each other's growth and expand their horizons together. Their relationship feels more alive and hopeful. Therapy nurtures the art of relationships for all of us.

When doing relational work, I try to give couples and families a new experience of therapy, and better yet, a new experience of each other.
Welcome! In my therapy space, I respect that you are the expert on your life. My approach involves working to understand how one's environment and patterns may be contributing to pain, dysfunction, or feeling stuck. I use an integrative systemic approach to explore one's past and current relationships, and one's relationship with themself. I like to partner with clients in their goals to process experiences, accept challenges, and evolve into the people they want to be. In addition to highlighting and expanding on peoples' strengths, I use humor, curiosity, and humility to connect with those that I work with.

My passion is supporting professionals in helping fields access their vulnerability to live more authentically. Helpers can hide behind compassion and caregiving at the expense of their own needs and boundaries. Sometimes this appears as resentment, difficulty emoting, or not feeling SEEN in your personal life. Good professionalism necessitates good self-work, and I'm here to support you in accessing the parts of you needing some TLC. As a relational therapist, I work with you to build on your natural self awareness and insight to explore your patterns and reframe/rescript them.

Have you ever felt, "Why is this happening to me, I don't know who I am anymore!" Constant worrying, low mood, relational challenges, and life transitions can wear you down. Simultaneously, navigating multiple cultural contexts can challenge your values and world views, often creating dissonance about who you are. Within the mindful space of therapy, I can help you examine the nature of your worries, the frequent blues, your existing thinking style, responses to people and the world around you. Through collaboration, I can offer alternative ways of thinking and responding to challenges, and help develop an effective coping toolkit.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
