Hello, it’s so nice to meet you! My name is Elaine, but you can call me Laney. The most important part of counseling services to me is the therapeutic relationship between the client and the counselor. As we establish a close bond, I promise to meet you where you’re at in this delicate process of emotional and mental healing. Counseling with me is focused on your comfort, trust, and autonomy. I will help you increase your level of self-awareness and identify barriers that impede on personal growth and overall well-being by utilizing empirically based therapies. I assure you; you will be in good hands.

As a therapist, I have been in private practice for 24 years. I work with children, adolescents, adults and families. Using a psychodynamic and relational approach, I help my clients identify patterns and recurring themes in their lives.
You may feel discouraged, overwhelmed, or exhausted right now. You may have challenges in your personal or professional relationships. You may be struggling to find a sense of purpose. Imagine what it would be like to have someone really listen to your story.

I use an attachment-based, relational perspective, incorporating psychodynamic, CBT, and emotion-focused therapies.
Want to make changes but not sure where to start? I know it seems daunting to find a therapist, but you’ve already taken the first step. That’s the good news. The bad news? There are a lot of therapists out there and one of the most important factors linked to therapeutic success is the relationship you have with your therapist. (But no pressure, right?)

My approach to psychotherapy is integrative and most informed by psychodynamic, relational, cognitive, and dialectical-behavioral theories and research.
My style as a psychotherapist is supportive, empathic, and nonjudgmental. I work with adults and adolescents who struggle with relationship issues, overwhelming emotions, and challenging life circumstances and transitions. I aim to help people better understand their areas of struggle and how they can use their strengths to overcome challenges. My goal is to help the people I work with achieve meaningful change. I prioritize tailoring treatment to individual needs. We can either begin therapy with concrete problem solving techniques and skills, or with examining what is going on in your life and identifying areas to focus on.

Intergenerational family dysfunction is not inevitable. I work with adults and children to untangle relational and behavioral patterns that are often foundational to the presenting problem. I take an integrative, strength-based approach and help the client identify perceptions and attributions that may be interfering with optimal self development and fulfilling relationships. This therapeutic approach is helpful in changing dysfunctional relational dynamics to those that promote growth and well-being.

I have extensive experience helping individuals cope with occupational conflicts, relational difficulties, lack of self-esteem, panic and stress, and overall dissatisfaction in life.
I am a licensed clinical psychotherapist who earned my Master’s Degree in Social Work from New York University. After completing my Master’s, I went on to attend a four year post-graduate program at The National Institute of the Psychotherapies, where I was certified in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I believe that with the right psychotherapy, one can face any life challenge head on and develop the insight and the skills to grow from them. I have an empathic approach that allows the space for my patients to look within and do the necessary work to improve their lives.

I have been trained primarily in Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness & Relational Theory.
You long for peace and clarity in your life but when navigating a major life transition those goals can appear out of reach. Divorce, illness, family and career changes can leave any one of us reeling, feeling beaten down, overwhelmed, confused and alone. A therapist can provide that safe non-judgmental space to explore thoughts, feelings and experiences that may be preventing you from moving forward. I work hard to tailor my approach to meet my client's needs always honoring the fact that this work is collaborative and each client is unique.

My orientation blends psychodynamic, relational, cognitive behavioral, mind-body, trauma informed and mindfulness approaches to help people understand, accept, change and heal.
Life can sometimes feel and be very complicated. As a psychotherapist in private practice for 25 years, I work with adults, adolescents, families and couples. The way I approach working with people is to create a compassionate, intelligent, non-judgemental, therapeutic space where a person can feel safe, heard and understood. A person can then be more at ease with talking about their concerns and problems in an authentic and meaningful way. I welcome people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities and family structures.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
