As a therapist, I believe that collaboration between patient and therapist is critical to the success of any therapeutic process. I am influenced by relationship dynamics and family systems. My work incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Relational Therapy, Family Systems and Multiculturalism. I hope to help clients live authentically, explore their aspirations, and reach their own personal goals. Most importantly, my work is shaped by the person sitting in front of me.

Do you find yourself getting stuck in the same relationship patterns over and over again? Do you find yourself doing everything in your power to discontinue previous relational patterns and behaviors? Are you struggling with self-doubt, low-self-esteem, and painful self-criticism that seems to be holding you back? My approach to therapy looks at these patterns and behaviors through the lens of parts work. This allows us to separate the self (you), from the parts that struggle with self-doubt, and from the parts that persist in repeating unhealthy relationships and behavioral patterns.

I am a trained and experienced therapist in relational psychoanalysis as well as traumatology. I was part of bringing these two together some decades ago. In addition I understand eating problems and body image distortion. My professional writing covers these areas. I work with hypnosis, guided visualization and the body, as well as sharing a deepening conversation about you. I want to meet you right there with curiosity, warmth, growing empathy and care. I am an open and informal person by nature yet, of course, I work within professional boundaries. It is about you. I look forward to meeting you.

With training in psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy, as well as evidence-based practices such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), I will tailor an individualized treatment approach to help you to slow down, locate your intuition, heal from trauma, and create a life that leaves you feeling connected and fulfilled.
Are you struggling to show up for yourself with the same care, concern, and compassion you bring to others? Or maybe you’re noticing patterns that repeat themselves within your relationships, but you’re not sure how to make a change. Therapy can help you to untangle and understand difficult emotions, allowing you to make choices that lead to new, more fulfilled ways of being. I specialize in working with adults who are looking for more fulfilling relationships, meaning in their careers, and support in navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions.

I work from an interpersonal/relational perspective in which we will observe interactions between us with honesty and compassion.
Therapy is a journey of self-awareness and liberating yourself from roadblocks that get in the way of living a full and meaningful life. It is also an avenue to manage your depression, anxiety or other emotional distress. I'm interested in your long-term growth and will assist you in identifying unconscious processes that make it difficult for you to move forward with success in your relationships, work and other endeavors.

I am a therapist who understands the importance of building rapport with my clients. In any healthy relationship, a successful therapeutic relationship is one which values honesty, transparency, acceptance, safety and trust. In me, you will find a therapist who is not only warm and inviting, but one who is willing to walk with you at your individual pace. If you are someone who is looking for homework, I will be ready with assignments in hand. Or if you just want to focus on processing through your experiences, my ears are open. You will feel heard and seen by me.

I am trained in Psychodynamic and Relational models of therapy.
It can be intimidating and nerve-wracking to seek out therapy. But in doing so, you are already taking the first big step towards healing and taking good care of yourself. I believe that gaining insight about our past experiences and how they continue to influence our relationships, thinking, and emotional lives is an important aspect of the healing and growth process. I also strongly believe in the experiential and relational aspects of therapy where we work collaboratively to understand how our therapeutic relationship informs the work and what it can tell us about you.

You are stuck in a dark maze carrying the crushing pressure of the world to succeed on your chest. While everybody is at the finish line of the race, you are handcuffed to the beginning of the line. The isolation and loneliness feel like a void in the pit of your stomach that is never filled. The emotions are like waves in the ocean, when it comes, it drowns you, and when it's quiet, it's boxed up in a container ready to explode. My post-grad includes the New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with extensive training in AEDP (focus on here-and-now relational and body - somatic) and EMDR for dating and breakups.

My framework is primarily relational, meaning the therapeutic relationship is the predominant agent of change.
Individuals and couples who see me for therapy are typically dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, a low sense of self-worth, grief, and/or trauma. They are struggling to take risks with vulnerability, to process loss, set boundaries, understand the power of no, discern safe spaces, and build trust. Many of my patients are challenged by the stories their anxiety tells them, negative self-talk, sadness that makes it difficult to effectively process their thoughts and feelings, and previous traumatic experiences or vicarious exposure to trauma.

I approach therapy from anti-oppressive, feminist, relational-cultural, and internal family systems lenses (can share more about what this looks like in a free consultation).
Emotional distress is too often pathologized when it's a reasonable response to the oppressive systems in which we live. Instead of trying to "fix" you or help you not feel any difficult emotions, I believe that all feelings have information, and we have the power to find out what that information is and choose what to do with it. I would aim to support you in strengthening your capacity to feel difficult feelings, to treat all parts of you with curiosity and compassion, and to determine what information your feelings are holding so that you can feel more connected to yourself and make choices that align with your values.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
