I’m particularly fascinated by the way one’s childhood may impact current relational patterns.
Therapy can be an intimidating process. How often have you pushed your mental health aside because life grew hectic; were told to “practice self-care” but aren’t sure what that entails; or been told to “just get over something” and you’re left feeling lost or overwhelmed? Being a human is challenging! We’re filled with complicated emotions that derive from our lived experiences, environment, family dynamics, personality, and genetics. My goal is to help you sort some of that out to relieve depression, anxiety, and interpersonal conflict.

Congratulations on taking steps toward establishing a more fulfilling, healthy, and successful life! In therapy, I work collaboratively with you to enhance your understanding of the internal and environmental factors that impact life, emerge as relational patterns, and potentially impede success. I offer a safe, comfortable space for the exploration of your concerns, ensuring you feel heard, respected, and understood. I enjoy working with diverse clients: of varying backgrounds and therapeutic needs. Though trained as a generalist, I sought additional education, practica, and research opportunities to develop the specialties of 1) counseling traditionally marginalized populations, 2) program development and evaluation, and 3) consultation and outreach.

I utilize an integrative approach that incorporates aspects of Relational Psychodynamic Theory, Attachment Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness.
Developing a meaningful therapeutic connection is the foundation for learning how to improve one's quality of life, develop healthy and fulfilling relationships, and cope more effectively with life stressors. Through the therapeutic relationship, we will work together to identify underlying patterns of behaving, relating, and experiencing that may be contributing to conflict in your life.

My 12 years of clinical experience has focused on sexuality, intimacy, and relational issues.
Seeking to improve our relationship with ourselves and others can feel uncertain and overwhelming. As a therapist, I strive to remove barriers by providing an open, trusting, and nonjudgmental space where self-acceptance and healing can be fostered for individuals and partnerships. Difficulties such as life transitions, relationship challenges, trauma, or unexpected events can leave us feeling disconnected and isolated. Through the collaborative experience of therapy, couples, polycules, or triads can find renewed, deeper bonds and individuals can untangle the past, process the current, and grow through supportive change.

I tailor my therapeutic approach to best fit each individual client, primarily incorporating client-centered, psychodynamic, existential, and relational theoretical orientations.
Clients in therapy with me commonly describe a plaguing feeling that there must be a better way to get through life than burdened by so much stress. My approach to wellness can be captured by the quote: "Stress in life is a given; suffering doesn't have to be." My goal in our work together is to examine the unique stressors in your life and help you develop mindful, healthy ways to live with the challenges that inevitably come up in life so that they no longer get in the way of how you want to be living.

Therapy that works goes beyond talking. Therapy that leads to change helps us learn to be in our emotions so that we can move through them. Therapy that heals often shifts something inside of us, whether or not the situation changes too.

My therapeutic approach combines mindful mind-body strategies and trauma processing techniques with a focus on relational and emotional change.
Life can be a struggle because of our internal and interpersonal difficulties. It can also feel daunting to reach out to another for help. The courage it takes to reach out is already the change process in motion in your life. My approach focuses not simply on the shame, guilt, anxieties, doubt and traumas that bring you to psychotherapy, but what is right and where is the glimmer of change in your struggles and traumas. I address traumatic experience, grief, addiction, emotional disturbances, life adjustments, and interpersonal stressors. I specialize in addiction recovery, PTSD and emotional disturbances, and personal growth.

Welcome! It takes energy and courage to search for a therapist who is a good fit for you. Therapy can help you feel more connected, further develop your purpose, reduce your self-doubt, and develop more effective ways of coping. At times it can be helpful to develop insight and awareness into thought patterns, stuck emotions, or relational patterns from your past, so you can work through them toward acceptance *and* action toward change. Insight alone isn't always enough, so it's important for us to work toward helping you translate that insight into the change & growth you hope for. I strive to create a non-judgmental, safe space.

We'll also explore and address stress related to work, transitions, shame, guilt, self-esteem, disappointment, isolation, communication, relationships (any configuration), identity, culture, trauma, grief, and loss. I work closely with each person to develop personalized treatment plans that target specific symptoms, needs, and goals. As a Middle Eastern & Kurdish immigrant, I also understand how the intersection of cultures, religions, and customs can affect people.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in relational, psychodynamic, and systems theories as well as mind-body approaches to healing and recovery.
I practice from a stance of radical inclusion, meaning I seek to welcome all parts of your experience and identity, even those that may feel shameful. I provide a warm and steady space to explore and uncover what feels true and we move at your pace. I have worked effectively with adults and adolescents who are healing from traumatic experiences, including interpersonal violence and abuse, sexual violence, adverse childhood experiences, and the impact of identity-based oppressions. I value the innate wisdom that clients bring to their own healing journeys and see you as the most important expert on your own experiences and desires.

There are times in life when it is difficult to believe that we will ever reach our dreams, hopes, goals, or have the future for which we had hoped. We may be feeling stuck, lonely, and unable to develop or access our wisdom and strengths. Too often, challenging life situations or decisions made in the past tend to have a lasting effect on our lives. I believe that everyone has the capacity to grow, change and heal our relationships with ourselves, our significant others, and those around us.

I work with clients to develop deeper insights into thought and behavior patterns and to help them find strategies to improve their relationships. My passion lies in helping individuals manage their mental health and helping couples manage mental health struggles, gender transitions, and polyamory. I work with my four-legged partner, a samoyed therapy dog named Eir, who provides comfort and support and takes an active role in play therapy with our younger clients. I have a history of providing equine-assisted psychotherapy.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
