I draw on a range of approaches, helping my clients improve self-esteem, enhance relationship skills and develop effective coping strategies. In a goal-focused, collaborative way, informed by my training as a psychoanalyst, I help my clients understand and modify ineffective relational and behavioral patterns. I conceptualize clients' struggles in a holistic and integrative way, as I integrate cognitive-behavioral approaches with dynamic theory to bring about real change. Using a mix of cognitive, behavioral, and insight-oriented strategies, I have been successful in helping clients better manage relationships, anxiety & depression.

I have a concentration of clients among college age students, and young adults. I specialize in eating disorders, and related issues. I also have a strong background in the performing arts, and see a significant number of creative clients. For twelve years I worked in a college counseling center. This has afforded me the opportunity to work with students who struggle with the concerns of people in their late teens, early twenties: depression; anxiety; ADD; OCD; substance abuse (as well as the more common issues surrounding living away from home, roommates, academic rigor, awaking sexual identity, etc.)

Psychotherapy focuses on restoring perspective and building confidence in addressing life's challenges. My approach is interactive, collaborative, and based on an appreciation of each person's creative potential. Through asking questions, sharing knowledge and observations, and getting feedback, we work towards self-discovery and understanding. Together we focus on clarifying goals and identifying effective ways to meet them. Psychotherapy involves recognizing patterns, expectations, or beliefs that may have been helpful in the past, but are no longer. Addressing these patterns removes barriers to change. Strengths are identified and fostered, becoming the foundation for new ways of approaching things.

We all face challenges in our lives. Some conflicts are the result of early childhood experiences, others more rooted in difficult, life altering experiences such as grief and loss, relationship issues, life transitions or long standing feelings of depression and anxiety. It often feels overwhelming to address difficulties on our own. A therapeutic relationship can provide the support and encouragement needed to help understand and change destructive thoughts or behavior patterns, confront ones past issues with compassion and make positive life changes.

New Client Openings for April 2024! I am dedicated to helping others find their own path to personal fulfillment. I believe each of us can expand on the ways we deal with stress and relationships. I'm committed to creating a warm, interactive and compassionate therapeutic environment. I have experience treating issues of anxiety, depression, parenting and relational stress, life transitions and trauma. Post pandemic life has created so many new sources of pressure and hardship, while often weakening our supports and connections. I believe therapy is a comforting and effective way to focus on our self care and well being.

My work is informed by relational, psychodynamic, family systems, and cognitive and dialectical behavioral theory.
Often, we find ourselves stuck. We repeat ineffective and painful patterns of behavior, and think worrisome and self-critical thoughts. Our past creeps in and impacts our present functioning. We struggle with conflict and communication in our most important relationships. It takes courage to tell your story, whether it is your first time or you have previously engaged in therapy. It is a privilege for me to learn about, and partner with you in pursuit of your goals. I see therapy as a safe and collaborative space to explore yourself, your areas of strength and of growth, and your relationships, without judgement.

I optimally resonate with clients who are interested in self awareness and taking responsibility for the part that they play in life and relational challenges. They are committed to healing past traumas in order to be able to live as fully as possible in the present. The understanding that self transformation very naturally attracts qualitative experiences and relationships enables psychotherapy and connective couples work to be optimally beneficial.

My team and I help individuals and couples. Our ideal client is someone who's interested in both healing and growth, who is goal oriented, and knows that how we make sense of things is fundamental. The symptoms about which we suffer are also an invitation to remember what we couldn't handle so that we heal and grow. I'm best suited to treating you where you're stuck, be it physical (like chronic pain, auto-immune), mental (like anxiety), emotional (like depression), relational (partners, children, parents, people you work with), and spiritual (like alienation).

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
