We may aim for the physical-psychological-relational-spiritual being to pursue health.
Sometimes life makes it feel like there are limited options, and our feelings can be overwhelming. However, in the face of pain and suffering, we have the power to choose how to engage with these hardships. There is freedom to choose our responses, and moving forward with committed action is empowering. I would be happy to collaborate with you in the therapeutic process, to explore feelings, learning coping skills, and maintain healthy responses. In life we may feel content being still, making lateral moves, or at times pivoting. As we navigate your views of self, thriving, living we can face carpe diem, pluck the day.

Those are big questions, of course, and so I use relational and insight-oriented therapy to get there.
I often work with people who are facing a major life transition and/or who are feeling "stuck." Whether that is a career change, divorce, having a child, or a major illness (just to name a few), therapy can be incredibly helpful in finding the ground beneath your feet by figuring out what your goals are and how to get there. I also work with a lot of individuals who have survived some type of trauma, including major medical illness. I find that the big "why are we here?" questions can often be important to address after traumatic experiences.

Although I work with a broad variety of issues, I specialize in relational concerns, especially in helping couples find healing, growth and harmony in their relationships.
For over 35 years I have worked with individuals, couples and families to solve problems, improve relationships and make life transitions. In this time I have learned to respect the uniqueness of each individual and family, as well as the abilities and courage they bring to the challenges they face. My approach is friendly, straightforward and solution-focused, but with appreciation for the variety and complexity of factors that may be involved with the issues that folks bring to therapy. I enjoy collaborating with clients to manage stress and modify the patterns of thinking, feeling and acting that concern them.

How We Treat One Another Matters: For better and for worse, across our whole lives, we operate in relationships. Our views of our "self" and how we relate to others develop from how we have been treated in relationships. Our capacities to love, to learn, to become our best, all emerge optimally within healthy relationships. Likewise, wounds of heart and soul emerge from ways we have been treated and/or choices we have made which have hurt us, sometimes very deeply. Persons who have experienced relational trauma and/or overwhelming life stressors are ideal candidates for clinical services at Gateway.

My professional experiences in law enforcement and child welfare allow me to offer a unique perspective in supporting veterans, medical, public safety, child welfare, and other professionals who are susceptible to experiencing personal, relational, and professional disruption due to post-traumatic stress, secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma, and burnout.
I seek clients who are open to discovering their story and how it led them to their current circumstance. I am best able to nurture a relationship with a client who is aware of their reason for seeking support and is comfortable with a direct perspective to realizing their goals. My approach to working with adolescents, adults, couples, and families is centered on the philosophy that we are experiencing components of our personal story daily. When we conclude a chapter, it can impact the next chapter. By understanding our experiences and crafting our next steps, we can shape our story.

Even after nearly 40 years as a therapist, each time I begin to work with people I feel as though I am walking on holy ground. Each person who comes to me willing to be vulnerable and open to the change necessary to bring about greater relational happiness and deeper personal awareness is treated with profound respect. Therapy takes courage to face that part of ourselves that may be limiting or sabotaging our relational and personal growth.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
