I come out of the Dan Allender school of relational counseling, which has a Biblical perspective.
My name is Todd Patrick and I am a Christian counselor who is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor serving in Spokane. I formerly was a counselor at the Genesis Institute in Spokane, Washington between 2014-2022. Thank you for looking at my profile page. I understand that it takes boldness to seek out help, but whether it is depression, anxiety, relationship problems, the loss of someone, a struggling teen, or spiritual issues, this may be the best thing you can do to move forward in your life.

With over 30 years of experience in providing mental health services, my approach integrates varied perspectives in supporting people in finding relief from emotional and relational pain. Symptoms are often expressing deeper experiences that have wounded your sense of trust in yourself, in others, in life in general, and may have left you struggling with knowing your own sense of meaning, purpose, and hope. You deserve an authentic, compassionate, safe, and hopeful place to reflect, and to seek help and healing. I am committed to providing effective, genuine, and meaningful help primarily to adults and teens.

Do you find yourself struggling in important relationships? Are you stuck in unwanted push-and-pull patterns with your partner or closest friends? Relationships are central to life, yet they can feel painful and confusing. Attachment strategies influence how we see ourselves and others and can impact most areas of life. The paradox of attachment trauma is that relational wounds create a profound longing for connection, but intimacy feels perplexing and risky. It is hard to think and act optimally when one’s intrinsic desires for belonging, safety, and love are unmet.

Clients feel sick of the relational patterns they get into.
There's a lot of talk these days about "boundaries," but what does that mean? Many are unsure. This is often part of a collection of symptoms, including self-esteem issues, getting lost in relationships, difficulty with moderation, and unrealistic goals of perfectionism, and more. I can help you understand these experiences, which are often related to codependency, resulting in anxiety, feelings of separation from others, problems with intimacy, and repeating parenting behaviors that you disliked growing up. Contributing factors can also be treated, including being raised by a narcissistic parent and other developmental traumas.

I utilize principles of relational-cultural theory, as well as DBT, motivational interviewing, and systems theory.
I'm glad you're here! There are points in everyone's life when they could use a little more support. Change can be daunting, whether it's finding a new therapist or starting counseling for the very first time. Wherever you are with your journey, congratulations on taking this step! My approach to therapy is goal-oriented, strengths-based, and empowering. This means we'll keep focus on the things you are doing really well and expanding on them, as well as looking at ways change might be useful. I work to meet folks where they are, using a harm-reduction model to create a safe and judgment-free space.

I believe that we are harmed in relationships and we heal in relationships. I approach therapy from a deeply relational space where everything that's occurring therapeutically is happening between us. Despite what problems or challenges you're facing, I invite you to show up authentically. I believe that as we enter into your story we together will attend to the various themes and patterns of your life, to listen to what's sitting below the surface of your unconscious, and to be present to the here and now of your emotional experiences. I believe in deep emotional work rather than just behavioral interventions.

I work with teens, adults, and families to strengthen self-love, navigate challenging personal and professional relationships, and increase connections that align with your value system. These and other stressors can weaken the body's ability to be as effective through life's challenges. My goal is to help find what events or dynamics affect you and explore the impacts those have on your well-being.

CURRENT limited openings. Anxiety, depression, self doubt, and daily stress can be so pervasive. Does the stress of daily life feel anxiety provoking and overwhelming? Are your job, relationships or friendships feeling stressful? Perhaps feeling stuck or unsettled is becoming a daily reality. It may feel like it's getting harder to thrive and telling people “no” feels hard or unmanageable. You may feel like you are alone, isolated and that you can’t talk with the people in your life about these issues. I want to help you figure some of this out, to learn to love and thrive in life again.

I approach therapy from an evidence-based perspective by letting you know what the research has shown to be the most effective way of handling whatever problems you’re struggling with. From there, we can work together to adapt that type of therapy to fit your specific needs & life circumstances so we can figure out how to make our sessions most helpful for you. I specialize in CBT, DBT, CPT/PE, Schema Therapy & Mindfulness-based therapies amongst other evidence-based psychotherapies. I accept First Choice Health insurance, which frequently contracts with some Kaiser plans. Please call to confirm I am in-network with your plan.

Life can be very stressful at times. Our moods, anxiety levels, thinking and behaviors can depend on how well we are able to manage these stressors over time. Sometimes, the coping skills we have learned simply are not enough and we feel overwhelmed and out of control. There is a solution to almost every problem. My goal in therapy is to provide a safe environment so that you can learn to better manage your thinking, feeling and behavior and regain control and power in your life.

Disclaimer: I am licensed in four states, therefore I'm unable to see everyone in person. I reside in Utah and consequently, I see others using telehealth. Even though I see people online, a connection is still possible. Try it, it may surprise you! Sometimes life is messy; it can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate on your own. That's why I do what I do! In a caring and compassionate way, I help you identify and overcome barriers to your happiness and well-being. Working together, we can explore effective ways to manage the complexities of life and develop coping strategies to better enable you to "enjoy the journey."

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
