I have assisted clients challenged and/or coping with chronic mental illness, harming issues, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, impulse/anger control, trauma, and relational (peer, couple, family, career, organizational) situations through the most optimal form (for both them and the specific issue) of modality: individual; couple; family; group.
For all of our individually unique strengths, skills, accomplishments and spirits, stress, obstacles, conflicts, issues, situations occur in everyone's life when seeking professional assistance can be more useful than requesting the same from a family member, partner or friend (despite their best intentions). I have spent my entire life/career (as a Volunteer; Serviceman; Business Professional and Counselor/Therapist) attempting to alleviate the pain and support and enhance the lives of individuals that I have been involved with. These sessions will represent OUR individual, integrated approach at attempting to resolve or best manage the presenting issue(s) and related obstacles, in a private, safe, and empathetic setting.

Therapy offers a safe place for exploration and a greater depth of understanding of both yourself and your relationships. It is also an avenue to enhance social connections, and a way to set goals and chart a path to achieve them. I work with clients to address any obstacles they may be facing and in helping them to enact a plan to achieve their desired outcomes. This partnership is different from person to person, because it’s about identifying any stumbling blocks clients may be facing and working through them. I value approaching people from a place of curiosity, empathetic understanding, and use a collaborative approach.

Therapy is a relationship where you are the driver and I am your navigator. I am here to help you meet your goals. I am an ally and closely work with the LGBTQ-IA community. I strive to create an affirming and safe environment for discussing concerns without judgment. My supportive and solution-based approaches are most effective in seeing positive changes take place. I include family members in treatment whenever appropriate to help build strength and supports. I have years of experience with adolescents and families. I also enjoy and work a great deal with educators/teachers and see many in my practice!

People come to therapy for a wide variety of reasons. Maybe you're feeling overwhelmed, depressed, or anxious. Perhaps you are coping with trauma, trying to make sense of a complicated relationship in your life, or feeling stuck by a lack of change. Whatever the reason, my goal is to create a warm, collaborative, and non-judgmental environment. I use humor, compassion, and supportive challenge to promote healing and foster change. Our sessions will be geared towards helping you make sense of difficult experiences and identifying patterns that don’t serve you.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
