I work with relational issues, communication, problems with sex and/or intimacy, trauma, anxiety, depression, anger management, various mental and emotional disorders, aging parents, affective disorders, job related stress, social stressors, grief, self-esteem, and other challenges.
Are you looking to make a shift? I am licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. I believe therapy can be seen as a process of unpacking. Things often go unsaid, which can manifest into various effects on the body, such as anxiety. Although staying with your emotions can be difficult, it can often be the pathway to healing. My clinical experience has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of our environment and relationships, as well as the positive shifts that can take place when offered supportive and validating resources.

I lead with listening and offer a relational, heart-centered approach in which your needs and values determine the direction that our work will take.
I am a somatic-based therapist whose work is rooted in bridging the mind and body. Many come to me for an approach that is not just trauma-informed, but one that also fosters the development of self-awareness and self-compassion when applying new insights. While trauma is my speciality, I enjoy working with teens & couples, highly sensitive individuals, creative artists, spiritual aspirants, neurodivergent beings, and those in the LGBTQIA+ community. I am passionate about using the rhythms of the natural world alongside plant medicine to learn how to live more harmoniously with ourselves and others.

My therapeutic approach is anchored in somatic relational techniques, which strongly emphasize integrating the brain and nervous system.
You never need to traverse this path alone. I want to acknowledge your courage in embarking on this transformative journey. I often liken my role in this therapeutic voyage to that of a co-pilot or co-author of your life story. My core mission is to empower individuals to unlock their fullest potential by navigating unresolved issues, healing from trauma, and breaking free from maladaptive patterns that have held them back from happiness.

People often come to me because they recognize something is not working and they are willing to admit that it is no longer fruitful to simply try to figure it out on their own. They are open to self-reflection, new ideas for coping, self-care, and communication with others. People present with all kinds of issues: depression and anxiety, relational struggles, difficulty connecting to what they want and following through on goals, unresolved trauma from the past or present, the use of coping mechanisms that had been helpful, but no longer are, and challenges posed by various life-stage transitions. We all need support in hard times.

If you are ready to explore these parts of yourself and interrupt patterns that are no longer serving you, then it may be time to engage in psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is a collaborative process which allows us to look at the areas that are causing distress, and identify ways to adjust your thoughts and behaviors to create positive change. I provide therapy in a safe, nonjudgmental environment where you can feel comfortable expressing yourself openly and authentically.

We will work collaboratively to consider the contextual, social, and relational factors that inform the experiences you have and the ways you approach life challenges.
Finding a therapist can be difficult, especially when experiencing life challenges, symptoms of depression or anxiety, and/or other stressors. For those of us with marginalized identities, it is crucial to identify spaces where we can explore and address these issues. In my practice, I work with women and LGBTQIA+ people to address issues related to identity, life transitions, family, work, relational conflict, self-esteem, and shame. I specialize in working with the relational others (e.g., partners, spouses, family, and friends) of transgender people to explore self-identity and transition (social, emotional, physical, & medical).

Hi, I'm Dr. Phillips! I work in New York City and Montclair, NJ and am currently taking new clients in both locations. I have worked with youth and families from many different backgrounds and believe in two fundamental truths: (1) modern life, in different ways, can be very hard for any person, regardless of one's circumstances, and (2) we are all trying our best, but sometimes we get “stuck.” I specialize in working with children and adolescents, and their families who are trying to understand and support them.

My group practice specializes in work with the LGBTQ+, consensually non-monogamous, and kink/BDSM communities. Are you worried that most therapists will not truly understand you or that you will have to censor yourself in therapy because of your sexual and/or gender minority status? I had these same concerns and they motivated me to become a psychotherapist who could help others like me. We will work together in a safe and relaxing environment to discover and actualize the solutions you need in order to live a more fulfilling life.

It is not easy being a parent, partner, earner or individual in the fast paced, competitive world of northern NJ and NYC. We can feel anxious, depressed, uncertain or lost in how we think and feel about ourselves, our relationships, our families, and our professional lives. We can want to make healthy and effective changes, but sometimes that can be hard to do alone and we need a trusted other that has the expertise to help us untie the knots we are caught in. Many of my clients are successful, but struggle with certain issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, parenting, and professional life challenges.

I offer a safe, compassionate space for you to be seen, heard, and supported to become the person you aspire to be. I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and also find Internal Family Systems to be a helpful model. With a background in dance, yoga, and meditation, I have a holistic outlook, and rather than focusing on one methodology, I tailor my approach based on your needs. I begin by helping you clarify what you want from therapy and then facilitating your way there as you access your strengths.

Therapy is a collaborative process that hinges on a relationship of trust and understanding. I offer my clients a warm, supportive and non-judgmental space where together we can explore and resolve whatever challenges you may be experiencing. Many of us have developed adaptations to our environments which may result in patterns and behaviors that no longer serve us. The work of therapy is to examine these adaptions with compassion and explore opportunities for growth and change.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
