My approach to therapy is integrative & diverse & I practice from a relational, humanistic lens, drawing from multiple theoretical modalities - mainly psychodynamic.
I approach the therapeutic relationship with authenticity, warmth, humor and non-judgment while meeting clients where they are. My approach is collaborative and curious, placing you as the expert of your own life while offering insight, compassionate support and holding space for vulnerability throughout the healing process. I believe all struggles in life to be valid and worthy of acceptance and empathy and I believe in the human capacity for resiliency. I place strong emphasis on building a trusting and safe client-therapist alliance and I strive to empower my clients while working together toward goals and desired life changes.

In sessions, I strive to create an empathic and creative space where you can bring all parts of yourself forward. Our time together will involve gaining a deeper understanding of your story, creating holistic goals based on your unique life circumstances, and working towards meaningful change.

I have a focus on providing collaborative support within a framework of social justice and a strong belief that each person has everything they need within them and sometimes we all lose touch with these things and could use some outside support to discover our answers. I view my role as a therapist as the bridge to the answers within that may be difficult to see. I believe that the context of our lives is important to understanding our experiences.

FIRST, MY PRACTICE IS CLOSED, AND I AM NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. I prefer to be contacted through email (megcat77@gmail.com) or text (802-598-2937). I have been practicing as a psychologist for over 30 years. My Masters degree in Clinical Psychology is from St. Michael's College, and my undergraduate degree is from U.V.M. I also completed a two year post-graduate training program in Behavioral Medicine, which provided me with a specialty in working with clients with chronic medical conditions. I teach coping skills and provide support to clients who are dealing with injuries and illnesses.

Are you feeling uncomfortable in your skin? Struggling to find motivation to do the things you enjoyed before? Feeling confused about your identity or your relationships? Engaging in behaviors you want to stop or don’t understand? I work to support people in exploring solutions to their mental health and recovery challenges and needs. I work with my therapy dog “co-therapists” (non-shedding labradoodles). I have a deep personal commitment to celebrating diversity and working with individuals with unique life experiences and identities. I am especially passionate about working with LGBTQIA+ folks (and am Queer/Genderqueer myself).

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
