We often start counseling because something doesn't feel right. You don't need to know what is "wrong" with you, and you definitely don't need to know your "diagnosis." Feeling "lousy" or frustrated is all we need to start with. As a dietitian of 15 years, I've worked with clients with food issues and eating disorders that were based in depression, anxiety, trauma, or shame issues. Sharing our truth with another person can feel strange and even embarrassing or shameful. My job (and so far I've been pretty good at it) is to make you feel safe and help you feel better. Yes, you have to show up, but I'll be there with you.
Mental health and bodily health are more connected than Western medicine has ever recognized. That said, it's still important to rule out possible medical reasons for depression, exhaustion, and even anxiety. Ideally, I'd like to consult with your healthcare provider, with your consent, to make sure you're getting any other necessary treatment.
Lots of people think they know what's "wrong" with us or have a diagnosis. But mental health is so much more than googling symptoms. Anxiety may actually be ADHD, bipolar may be premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It's SO important to me that we find out what's REALLY going on and that we work through more than symptoms so you can be well.
