I view counseling as a process of guiding people toward greater resiliency, self-awareness, and overall well-being. This may include improving your self-care habits (exercise, nutrition, sleep) and developing social/spiritual support (12-step or other support groups, meditation, yoga). I also teach secular mindfulness classes and groups.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Combines cognitive therapy principles with meditative practices to help prevent depression from returning. Developed by Drs Zindel Segal, Mark Williams, and John Teasdale, MBCT has been clinically proven to be as effective as medication in preventing relapses of depression, as well as relieving the severity of symptoms in anxiety disorders and bipolar disorder. Best suited to adults who are not acutely depressed. Eight weekly 2-hour sessions, plus a day-long retreat.

Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP)

An innovative relapse prevention program that integrates mindfulness practices with evidence-based cognitive and behavioral strategies. Developed by Drs Alan Marlatt, Sarah Bowen, and Neha Chawla of the University of Washington. Best suited to adults who have completed an addiction treatment program, are motivated to maintain treatment goals, and are willing to make lifestyle changes that support their well-being and recovery. Eight weekly 90-minute sessions, plus a day-long retreat.
