I just want you to know that whatever it is you're going through, someone out there cares and is willing to listen! I hope I can be that person who can help. Welcome, fellow earth wanderers to my therapy page. If you've made it this far, you are at the point of knowing something isn't quite right in your world. That means you're above and beyond the others walking through life thinking, "it's fine. I'm fine. We're fine". I'm an empathetic, open minded veteran who also will likely have a cat join in for session. I have many...let's call them therapy animals. I offer a safe, inclusive, affirming safe space. Although I'm a white male, I have years of experience working within LGBTQIA+ and POC populations and am committed to exploring unconscious bias and working in an anti racist way.

I believe that validation is key to creating a foundation from which to begin recovering from mental health challenges. If you do not feel validated, you will continue to suffer, often times in silence. I also believe in being my true authentic self with my clients in hopes that this will inspire them to do the same. The important thing for me is that I can meet you where you are and empower you to start making the changes you would like to see. “The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction not a destination.” – Carl Rogers, On Becoming a Person

You can be both amazing •and• have room to grow. It’s sometimes a challenge to process and manage the big, uncomfortable feelings we may experience in life. Regulating emotions, tolerating distress, and struggling in relationships are areas where many people struggle. You are capable of changing things and creating a life with which you can be content and more fulfilled. It may feel like life is primarily stressful, confusing, or difficult right now, but it’s also full of beauty and joy. I am here to assist you with learning how to create more positive moments and improve your ability to cope with the inevitable, tough ones.

Cultivating self awareness skills can be one of the most challenging tasks we attempt to do. Not only do we all have others telling us who we are, we have societal voices telling us who we should be. It can be difficult to navigate alone. Knowing how to balance what we can accept and what we can change may help anxiety within our relationships with others and with ourselves. I invite you to see others and be seen; To look into a mirror and really see ourselves, as we are.

One of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. Life is full of unexpected events that sometimes leave us feeling unsettled. Whether you are experiencing anxiety, grief, childhood trauma, or just need someone to listen and give you a different perspective. Therapy can work for you. My belief is that therapy is a one-size-fits-all, therefore I use a combination of evidence-based therapy techniques tailored to your individual needs. I aim to make sure you feel comfortable as we work together to explore your story and focus on personal growth and healing.

Accepting new clients. My extensive experience has afforded me a viewpoint that brings hope to others. My passion and motivation have always been to work alongside individuals at the most vulnerable time of their lives. It can be difficult to manage environmental and social pressures that compromise our decision making, leaving us with feelings of no way out.

Men and women are different, and guys have very specific counseling needs. A lot of men cringe at the thought of counseling, and understandably so. My goal is to show the guy who hates the idea of counseling how helpful it can be and that masculinity isn't inherently negative. Being a man is a good thing and being a good man is even better. My PhD research was on help-seeking behavior in men. I know that making that first phone call seems terrifying, but you owe it to yourself to give this a shot. You owe it to yourself to be well.

A motivating force for me in counseling is my discovery that we experience a normal response to abnormal conditions and these normal responses may not serve us in future experiences. In my six decades I’ve learned that Life happens for us not to us. This led me to my new path of counseling and service to others. My personal approach is that of compassion, unconditional acceptance, wisdom, and desire to learn more. My clinical focus areas are in addiction/recovery/relapse, complex trauma, LGBTQIA issues, religious trauma, shame/guilt, depression, anxiety, and grief.

Hi, I'm Branda. I have been working with teenage girls and young women for 10+ years in the Lubbock area and I have a developed a passion for helping them learn their strengths and find their path in this stage of life. This population experiences growing pains, mental health concerns, relationship struggles, and low self-esteem, among many other issues impacting their daily lives. My goal is to create a safe space to navigate who they are while being comfortable to do so. I want my clients to feel heard and supported while recognizing the difficulties of life and learning how to grow through their struggles.

Reality Therapy

Is reality therapy evidence-based?

Reality therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapies. However, some research does indicate that reality therapy might be helpful for people with addiction, and may be effective in treating social anxiety in young people.

How long does reality therapy last?

Reality therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Reality therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of reality therapy long after treatment has ended.

Does reality therapy work?

Reality therapy can help a person manage concerns such as eating disorders, addiction, substance use, anxiety, phobias, and relationship difficulties. This type of therapy encourages a person to be accountable for their behaviors. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure. Reality therapy can be useful in one-on-one therapy or in group sessions. This method may be used with children, families, and adults.

What are the limitations of reality therapy?

This therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the therapist focuses on choices made by the individual in the present day. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over others. This format may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every client.
