How we experience mental health concerns is reliant on several variables. One of the ones that is our overall health. Have we been diagnosed with a chronic or terminal illness? It is not just how we “feel” about our illness; it is also how our body is reacting to our illness or healing. Another variable is family history and dynamics. What has been our family history with both mental and physical health? What is my role with my family? These are only a few examples of topics to consider. Lastly, another variable is my perception of self. It is not a question of how I see my behavior, but it is a matter of what is my “why” in life.
My experiences, both clinically and academically, provide me with opportunities to work with both individuals and families, especially in the area of mood dysregulation, health behaviors (e.g., weight loss, diabetes, cancer, dementia, etc.), Communication issues, and perception of self. My approach is based on mindfulness and contextual family therapy.
I understand that transitions in life can be a challenge to the individual and the family. When we are looking for therapeutic care, we can get overwhelmed with the options and approaches, which may lead us only to further frustration, anxiety, or giving up. This service is offered both online and in-person. It is designed to increase health literacy, improve overall health communication, and empower each person to live a functional life. The groups will meet for up to eight sessions and focus on developing perception of self, as well as building community.
