Life can become especially difficult at times, to the point that your best efforts are not making a difference. Your point of concern may be with mental health, relationship or family, job or career, marriage, athletic performance, or spiritual life. You need more than pat answers. What you want is the opportunity to be heard in a safe, confidential place. What you long for is to be understood, and to discover what will help bring about improvement, restoration, and transformation.

Life is full of changes, challenges and decisions. When those become critical, you can find yourself at a crossroads, unsure of what to do or where to go. As a licensed counselor, I can assist you in sorting through all of these issues. I can assist you, your child, or your family in adjusting to serious life changes or in recovering from trauma, I can also assist with grief resolution, career changes, adapting to chronic illnesses, and LGBTQ issues. Through the use of EMDR, trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy, and other evidence based practices, healing can result.

I got into therapy so I could help people end the cycles detracting from their fullest potential in life. So many of us plug through the day with nasty negative thoughts about ourselves, leaving us drained of energy and an incapacity to be mindful and present with each other. Using EMDR, mindfulness, and a heavy dose of humanity and empathy, I help my clients obtain the changes they seek in order to be the best versions of themselves. My style is thoughtful, witty, intentional, and comfortable and I'm always happy to help those who are ready to help themselves grow!

My name is Brittain and I love helping people accomplish goals and live more authentically. Feeling alone in our struggles can be hard, so my goal is to help you feel heard and valued as we work together to identify and overcome the obstacles you are facing and move toward a more fulfilled life. I believe each person and their struggles are unique, so I approach the counseling process to meet you right where you are, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. While I believe true healing is found through a relationship with Jesus Christ, I respect that not everyone shares this belief and will integrate it only upon request.

The first time looking through Psychology Today profiles can be overwhelming. It can still be overwhelming even if you’ve done it many times. You may already be feeling so stuck, so low, so unmotivated and maybe even be asking yourself the question, “what’s wrong with me?”. If that’s the case, combing through these profiles with so many words can feel like a lot. There is no shame in feeling that way and you are certainly not alone. My hope for you and everyone looking for help is that you can find a space where you feel safe and connected to work on why you are struggling.

You're googling for a therapist because you just don't know what else to do to help your teenager or you're in your 20s/30s and questioning a lot of decisions you’ve made. You’re full of worry, constant thinking, sleepless nights, or you just want to shut out everyone. For families, I work with teens who feel depressed (for some it looks like anger) and parents who feel like their child is “closing off the world.” For adults, I work with millennials that are unsure about their substance use, unhappy with their relationships, or experiencing depressive symptoms.

Therapy works best when clients feel heard, respected and empowered to set their own goals and timing for personal growth and change. Times of crisis, though overwhelming, can yield great opportunites for meaningful change for individuals and families. I believe therapy is about instilling and nurturing hope so people can become the best versions of themselves.

Is your family hurt by addiction? Does your relationship with your partner feel like it keeps going in circles? Are you working through your LGBQI and Trans* identity? Each of these scenarios can be hard on your mental health, your everyday tasks, and your family. You may feel like no one understands what you and your family are going through. You have reached out to your family and friends, but they do not fully understand. They want to fix your problem without sitting with you through the pain. Without fully understanding you.

Looking for mental health help but the idea of traditional therapy kind of freaks you out? Sweet, I can help with that. I’m a licensed therapist, but work as a life coach so I can be a little less clinical and a lot more authentic. I’m a big believer that most people don’t need someone to unpack their problems and give them a worksheet for an hour once a week, but really need someone to walk alongside them, and encourage them step by step. Whether you are hoping to finally overcome that dang anxiety that keeps you stuck, or feel good in your body for the first time in your life, or just want help reaching some new goals, I got you.

I work with survivors of childhood abuse, those with PTSD, and addictions. Abuse and trauma leaves a lasting impact on your body and can create symptoms like anxiety, depression, substance abuse, troubled relationships, and insomnia. Is it difficult to function in day-to-day life or do you feel like you just can't get it together? You may be feeling lost, hopeless, stuck, and afraid. Therapy can provide a time to be understood and heard in a safe, confidential place. We all have strengths and the answers inside of us, but sometimes we need help peeling back the layers. I understand because I am a survivor of trauma too.

Email is the best means of communication. There are times when our past can creep up into our present and take charge. Doing the best we can with the skills we have, we attempt to triumph over pain, heartache, trauma, fears, etc. However, there are times when we feel broken no matter how hard we try to put the pieces back together. Although we cannot change the past, we can put the pieces back together and still be beautiful; different yet beautiful. I like to think of therapy like the art of kintsugi, putting our broken pieces back together with a gold bond.

You don't have to do this alone. You put on that mask everyday and "fake it till you make it." You ignore the stuff of your past and present that keeps resurfacing. Imagine...just imagine, if you no longer had to fake it. Imagine...just imagine, if you no longer had to wear that mask. Healing IS possible, and you don't have to do it alone.

Life can feel overwhelming. One minute it's your job, then your relationship, next the kid(s), your family, and maybe even painful memories from your childhood. You just can't seem to catch a break. You try everything to get on the right track, but something always seems to get in the way. You've tried so hard to climb out of the worry, frustration and sadness; but eventually it's just exhausting. Should you give up? Or maybe just do the bare minimum to get by. You don't know which way to turn.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Greenville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
