In clinics, a hospital, and private practice, I've worked for over fifteen years with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma, ADHD, addictions, and psychosis.
My first goal as a therapist is to help you relate to yourself with more compassion, replacing harsh self judgement with eager curiosity. As this develops, we will work together to gain a better understanding of the underlying issues that lead to anxiety, depression, and other challenges to happiness. By helping you see yourself more clearly, you can live a more genuine, meaningful life, with stronger relationships.

Therapy is a wonderful opportunity to gain a deeper sense of fulfillment in your life. By exploring and understanding your feelings, thoughts and behaviors you will begin to develop more self-awareness and self-acceptance. It is quite rewarding to better understand the many complicated and self-sabotaging part of yourself and gain more control over those behaviors. Developing insight allows you to have a greater understanding of who you are and the life choices you have made. Insight and self-awareness give you more freedom to make healthier choices and change unsatisfied areas of your life.

You might come for therapy because you've stopped wanting anything and can barely drag yourself out of bed; You might be so worked up about something you can't concentrate or sleep at night; Maybe you don't know what you want or don't want to want what you want. Maybe you cling to relationships that go badly. Maybe you place obstacles in your own way. Maybe you know what you want but are unable to pursue it. Maybe you feel guilty or worry that something terrible will happen. Psychotherapy and/or psychoanalysis can help. For more go to my website: http://www.btholfsenlcsw.com/

While many of us face similar life challenges, the ways in which these experiences impact us varies greatly. I strive to tailor my therapeutic approach to the needs of each unique individual, couple, and family. I utilize the process of mutual exploration of issues that stem from the past while staying rooted in the present issues that prompted the decision to seek out help. In times of crisis, I shift into a more active role and focus on skills coaching and managing stress. I provide individual therapy to adolescents, adults, and older adults and have experience treating families and couples.

Many of us enter therapy feeling lost. Starting this journey-lost in the forest of feelings, pain, or trauma-can be so daunting. But this is likely one of the bravest things you'll ever do. And you shouldn't have to wander this forest alone. As your therapist, I'll walk beside you each step of the way, as your equal, your guide, and your support through the journey to healing.

In my experience, most people reach out for help when they realize that the coping skills and strategies they are utilizing are not working for them, or they may be overwhelmed by a particular event, such as the loss of a loved one. I have a warm and nurturing style, believing that often only when we feel supported by another are we best able to realize our potential. Many of my clients are suffering from depression, relationship issues, stress, anxiety, trauma, and grief.

Psychosis Therapists

What’s the most effective treatment for psychosis?

The most effective treatment for psychosis is coordinated specialty care. In this model, a team of professionals works with a patient to address all aspects of the underlying disorder. This approach incorporates individual or group therapy, employment and education support, family support and education, medication management (which often involves low doses of antipsychotics), and case management to facilitate problem-solving as needed.

When should people seek treatment for psychosis?

People should seek immediate treatment at the earliest indication of psychosis. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized or blocked speech, and agitated body movements. Early signs that a person may be developing a disorder that will lead to psychosis include suspiciousness of others, memory problems and distractibility, an inability to think clearly, rapid or nonsensical speech, withdrawal from friends or family, aggression toward others, and sensitivity to bright lights or noises.

What if psychosis is left untreated?

Without treatment, psychosis can have significant repercussions, including injuries, job loss, homelessness, financial or legal trouble, ruptured relationships, and suffering for the person and their family. While early treatment for psychosis often yields the best results, there is no point past which it becomes useless to seek treatment. At any point, treatment can make a difference.

How do I get someone else to seek treatment for psychosis?

It’s extremely difficult to watch a loved one suffer from hallucinations, delusions, and other elements of psychosis—sometimes exacerbated by their fears of treatment. Have a conversation with them in a quiet space and maintain a calm, supportive tone. Share your concerns about behaviors you’ve observed, suggest treatment, and explain the potential benefits. Listen carefully to their responses. The person may not be ready after one conversation, but with time, they may come around.
