I have an integrated approach that focuses mainly on the therapeutic relationship but also use multiple therapeutic approaches ranging from cognitive behavioral therapy to psychodynamic work.
I specialize in working with adolescents but also had a long stint working with geriatric patients alongside a well-respected neuropsychiatrist in Texas. I've worked with substance addiction as a specialty in three states and have a long history of helping patients with childhood trauma. I have a general practice and work with issues such as anxiety, depression, LGBTQIA-related, and shame/low self-worth. My ideal client wants to change and is not afraid of doing a little homework between sessions.

When everyday life gets you down, sometimes asking for help can be the hardest. I see therapy as a journey that we take together; providing trauma inform care, CBT, DBT, psychodynamic, substance abuse treatment, and support for growth and change.

While my theraputic approach is grounded in psychodynamic theory, I utilize CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, expressive art, and play therapy techniques.
Life tends to throw us curve balls. With all of our energy spent juggling obligations, responsibilities, and managing daily stresses, it's easy to wake up one day and realize that you just feel "stuck." Making the decision to begin therapy can be difficult, but it's the first step towards regaining control of your life. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, experiencing relationship difficulties, or just want a different perspective on whatever is holding you back, I'm here to help you navigate and overcome these challenges. Every person's situation is unique. I do not treat the therapeutic process as "one-size-fits all."

I provide therapy to individuals, couples, families, and groups; some interventions/theories, and diagnosis include CBT, DBT, Psychodynamic, Mindfulness, Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, Grief, Adjustment Disorder, and Personality Disorders.
Greetings! When life gets to be overwhelming, more than you can handle, or maybe just at a point where you need some professional and unbiased guidance, I can help. My ideal client is someone that is open to allowing me to help them reach their desired goals, and improve their mental and overall well being. My treatment approach is from an ecIectic lens. I am here to meet you where you are. No two people are exactly the same, and as such, they should not be treated with the exact same approach and techniques. I believe that being a competent, and ethical clinician, with great listening skills is paramount to providing optimal care.

My practice is grounded in contemporary psychodynamic theory and liberation psychology.
I appreciate and am profoundly moved by the courage people bring to the work of therapy. I strive to honor your commitment by creating a safe and supportive environment that will allow you to experience therapy as alleviating symptoms and moving towards your goals. I see people with a variety of concerns: such as chronic sadness, anxiety, conflict in relationships, loss, life transitions, or a vague sense of being disconnected from one's true self or purpose in life. Therapy can expand your sense of yourself, deepen relationships, ease life transitions, and enrich your life in unforeseen yet exciting ways.

I apply cognitive-behavioral therapy, EMDR, positive psychology, and psychodynamic approaches in English and Spanish to work with trauma disorders, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, relationship issues, self-esteem, and phase-of-life problems.
I firmly advocate that treatment isn't a one-size-fits-all solution; it must be customized for each individual's unique needs. Establishing genuine trust and creating a safe space are paramount for clients seeking to enhance their well-being. My focus is on fostering room for vulnerability, genuineness, and empathy. Life brings both rewards and challenges that can be overwhelming. Together, we can navigate the curveballs, develop coping skills, heal past traumas, and build healthier patterns to face any obstacle.

I'm experienced in both modern and historical approaches; psychodynamic, attachment-based, internal family systems, addiction, and psychosynthesis.
When we feel stuck in our lives, for weeks, or years, it can take a toll on us in ways we may not see. Time passes and we don't feel any further in our life. We're left feeling exhausted and alone in our pain. My name is Ryan, and I provide therapy for people who are looking to break free. Whether it's poor relationships, anxiety, depression, substance or process addictions, trauma, or a desire to deepen their connection with others, I help my clients find strength, flexibility, and compassion, returning themselves to the feeling of being whole.

I am an LPC-R who obtained my B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech and my M.S. in Clinical Counseling from Radford University. My goal as a therapist is to help clients who are seeking to garner further insight into understanding why they respond to things the way that they do. One’s past can influence how they show up in the here and now. As such, sometimes individuals respond to situations in ways that no longer feel beneficial. Utilizing a phasic psychodynamic framework amongst other integrative approaches, I seek to support clients in understanding those connections between past and present in order to make lasting change.

I provide psychotherapy for individuals interested in developing a better understanding of themselves to help address difficulties in a deep, meaningful way. Psychodynamic psychotherapy goes beyond homework and other exercises to look at relationship patterns, personality styles, and current experiences that may be contributing to your symptoms. Engaging in psychotherapy requires patience, a curious mind, and an honest desire to make changes. In addition to psychodynamic psychotherapy, I also provide psychiatric medication management if needed, diagnostic second opinions, and consultations.

I utilize psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness techniques to help clients develop resilience, insights, and healthier lives.
So many of us present a high-functioning face to the world, but our inner lives tell a different story. Depression, anxiety, and other issues are natural byproducts of the stressful lives we lead. I work with adults, teens (16 and older), couples, and families, ranging from adolescents facing developmental struggles to stay-at-home parents and Beltway professionals. As a native Northern Virginian, I can relate to the challenges of living in this frenetic environment. My previous military and consulting experience give me an understanding of issues that busy professionals deal with like self-care and work-life balance.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
