I am a relational, compassionate, and empathetic therapist trained in a variety of evidenced based therapies including (CBT), (DBT), Humanistic Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Therapy, and Psychodynamic.
Each of us reach a point in life where we need to pause, breathe, and restart. For some of us that restart will happen on our own for others of us that restart will require someone a few steps ahead of us to reach back and give use a hand. I would be honored to explore the obstacles in your life, identify the changes you want and deserve while providing you the tools to create a life that you are proud to show the world.

Mary works with individuals and couples to address attachment and emotional enmeshment, performance anxiety, moral injury and religious trauma, personality dynamics, and systems that cause people to feel stuck in life and relationships. Using an eclectic, psychodynamic approach to postmodern and constructivist theories, clients can expect to find meaning in problem solving and strengthen interpersonal relationships outside of therapy. In doing so, Mary integrates humor and everyday language in evidence-based therapies to educate clients along the way.

My methods of practice include: Relational (discovery through the therapeutic relationship), Existential (a here-and-now focus), Cognitive-Behavioral (developing concrete action plans), Psychodynamic (how events from your past continue to effect your life in the present), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (learning to find balance and possibilites between the extremes).
The purpose of therapy is generally straight forward. Individuals seek professional help when conflict in their world causes pain. In the counseling session, clients share their concerns and therapists share their training and professional experience . I believe that it is my responsibility to provide a safe place where clients can talk about their thoughts, feelings and experiences in a non-judgmental atmosphere. My approach is interactive, validating, compassionate and collaborative. Depending on the client and/or the specific situation, I work from a variety of perspectives.

I practice primarily from a psychodynamic orientation, meaning I believe we can better understand our present issues through exploring our past.
Life can be full of challenges and setbacks. At times, it can feel very overwhelming and make it hard to cope. However, we do not have to go through them alone. If you find yourself feeling stuck, unmotivated, and discontent with life in general, it may be time to begin therapy. I specialize in treating issues involving self-esteem, relationship conflict, emotion regulation, body dysmorphia, and sports performance.

Early in life we learn to disconnect from our bodies and emotions in order to survive and adapt to the environment. Overtime, this manifests as patterns of behavior and self-rejection that though were once adaptive, now only keep us stuck. These patterns typically manifest as anxiety, depression, self-hatred, toxic shame, addictions, obsessions, compulsions, codependency and relationship problems. I work experientially in the moment to get to the root of what is getting in the way of desired experiences on an identity level. Many clients describe this process as a gradual “coming home” or reconnection to their authentic self.

The cornerstone of my practice is the belief that actual connection with a real human being will go further than any single psychological theory. My degree is in clinical psychology with an emphasis in applied existentialism, which really just means applied humanity. I am a pragmatist and find mental and emotional health is contingent on meeting everyone where they are, rather than where anyone thinks they "should" be. I take pride in my honesty, compassion, and faith in humanity's ability to overcome. I truly love helping people through hard times, and look forward to helping you however I can.

I believe there is a person behind every problem, and a story behind every issue. Therapy is a partnership between the client and counselor in which they work together to find and expand upon the client's strengths in order to build efficacy and resilience in tackling the challenges they are facing.

Feeling safe on our own and feeling connected with others is the key to both our happiness and success; it can also be one of the most challenging things we do in our lives. I have spent my career working with a wide variety of individuals to support them in learning strategies to get their needs met in healthy ways. I specialize in working on attachment issues and relationship issues for both children and adults. In our time together, we would work to develop a treatment plan including setting goals and agreeing on interventions to help you to achieve those goals to live a more fulfilling and satisfying life.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
