I draw from psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches in my practice. We work together to try and gain a deep understanding of the way your mind works. This can help you discover obstacles and possibly hidden patterns that are preventing you from getting more joy and fulfillment from life. Our work together is done in a safe, and compassionate atmosphere. I can help you improve relationships, increase self-esteem, find relief from depression and anxiety.

Psychodynamic (Jungian) orientation: Just as the conscious mind, the unconscious mind can be directional.
Everyone needs to talk about their personal concerns, emotions, and life challenges. At times, it is best to talk to someone who is not a friend or family member. I provide a place and process for these personal conversations. I will support you as you resolve old issues and emotional blocks, find new insights and choices, develop new ways of coping and acting. I am interactive and supportive. I work with individuals experiencing stress/anxiety/trauma; depression; childhood and relationship issues; life transitions - divorce, the death of someone important, illness, and transitions of midlife or becoming an elder; ADHD.

I draw from EMDR, attachment, and psychodynamic therapy, while also utilizing other tools tailored to each individual I work with.
I see individuals who are experiencing feelings of depression, anxiety, body image issues, relational distress, spiritual issues, grief/loss, and eating disorders. Many of my clients are trying to cope with the effects of trauma in their life in addition to feelings of insecurity, perfectionism, self-hatred or shame. If any of this sounds like you, I want you to know that you are not alone and counseling can help. It takes great courage to seek counseling, and I can help you develop insight into yourself, learn new tools for coping, find your voice, and seek healing from your past.

I draw on contemporary relational, emotionally-focused, attachment/developmental, and psychodynamic, approaches to develop a unique and specifically appropriate response to your concerns.
Only accepting group therapy referrals. In my experience, life is better and easier if you have someone that understands you, sees it from your point of view, and helps you navigate through it. A good therapist is like a fellow traveler who journeys with us into awareness, facilitating the insight necessary to heal and grow. I am a passionate facilitator of this process, helping my clients make sense of their lives and relationships, heal what's kept them stuck, explore new ways of being and live richly. The therapy we do is deep and has long-lasting effects, and the changes become your second nature, even after therapy ends.

I utilize a modern relational and collaborative approach along with psychodynamic theory, CBT-based skills, and a host of trauma-informed/trauma-specific practices. My theory is that a combination of a deeper understanding of self, coupled with practical skills, can lead to sustained self-discovery and curiosity, desired personality changes, and relief. I specialize in working with individuals who struggle to regulate emotions and mood, are working through the impacts of childhood trauma in adulthood/young adulthood, are experiencing interpersonal issues, existential dread, anxiety, depression, and/or chronic suicidality.

My psychotherapy practice prioritizes creating a safe space to explore what lies beneath the symptoms you might be feeling or experiencing. I believe that our symptoms, mental or physical, are the outward manifestations of our inner wounds. They are cues to where the work can begin. I work with both adults and adolescents. I am as passionate about helping adults understand how their childhoods affect their current patterns and behaviors as I am about supporting adolescents along their often complex journey to adulthood.

People's stories are one of the most valuable things we have in life. If you want to have a meaningful relationship with someone, you need to be able to understand your own story. Helping individuals to develop and enhance their personal stories is at the crux of my work as a therapist. We all have public and private lives, and I believe the power of developing the stories behind these separate selves is how people vividly change their lives.

Fast heartbeat, stomach in knots. Worry has become your constant companion. Right now, everything feels as if it's covered in a veil of "what-if's." The hopelessness and depression are growing. In the midst of it all, it can seem as if there's no way out, that these emotions will last forever. You're so tired of life feeling dreary, tiresome, and hopeless. The anxiety and sadness have gone on for far too long. It's a lonely and isolating place to be. You can't help but wonder, "How long can I go on this way?!" There is hope. Therapy can help anyone, including you! Armed with the right tools, you can overcome fear and sadness.

If navigating your personal and/or professional roles involved putting your challenges "on mute", you may at some point sense how unspoken stress will find its way to be seen. Is your physical body overwhelmed with unresolved psychological distress ? If it doesn't feel right that exhaustion/emotional disconnection from who/what you care about become your "normal", your individualized counseling can be your "mini retreat"- a venue to shift away from unhelpful vicious cycles, address origins of imbalance, integrate your strengths and move towards aliveness and true presence.

I strive to create a safe, respectful space in which we can work together to understand the current problems and conflicts impacting your life, and identify self-defeating patterns that keep you from reaching your full potential. We will watch to see how and when these patterns occur in the therapeutic process itself and work to trace problems back to their roots in earlier periods of your life. By gaining a deeper understanding of ourselves, we attain greater freedom to choose how we wish to live, to strengthen our relationships and find joy in life.

At Connections First we have faith in the power of connection: with your inner life and to the outer world through meaningful relationships. We believe that mental health is an effect of feeling more deeply connected to ourselves and to others through the safety of transparent, emotionally honest relationships. How we communicate with ourselves and those we care about determines whether we possess integrity and feel empowered to express ourselves as human beings. Much of our symptoms are the effects of emotional, psychological, and physical isolation and self-alienation which can even happen when we are surrounded by other people.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
