I am well versed in psychodynamic, client-centered and cognitive-behavioral therapies.
Have you ever found yourself saying, "I'm crazy for feeling this way, no one else acts like this."? If so, I assure you that you are not crazy nor are you alone. In fact, you are probably coping the best way you know how. It is my professional experience that no emotional issue is too complex to heal. For 14 years, I have collaborated with individuals and their supports to regain control from the devastating impact of trauma, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, grief, low self-esteem and transitional issues.

Working from a client-centered and psychodynamic approach, I specialize in work with child and adolescent clients, as well as women’s and parenting issues.
We each have a story, and that story matters. It is often our story that serves as the holding spot for some of our burdens and the very birthplace of our heart’s desires. I believe each client’s story is important and relevant and to be invited into another’s story of personal growth and healing is among the most profound and sacred of human experiences. As a Doctoral level Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I view the work I do as deeply personal and collaborative. In my work with clients, I place high value on the therapeutic relationship, which is essential for growth and healing.

I offer cutting edge treatment techniques, such as DBT and EMDR, but maintain a psychodynamic framework for understanding my clients' emotional and therapeutic needs.
I AM NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS AT THIS TIME. My clients have gone through traumatic or disorienting experiences, and struggle with depression, anxiety, or relational challenges. I have over 30 years of experience helping to resolve such issues, and assisting people to develop healthy, fulfilling lives. True freedom is the ability to respond to what life presents with a unified sense of identity and purpose. It is my honor to assist struggling individuals to recover this ability.

As a psychologist in private practice, I have the opportunity to work with people in order to optimize their emotional well-being. I work collaboratively with individuals to assist their identifying factors which have caused distress. Together we work to discover the obstacles to feeling better. We consider patterns that have developed over time to understand their adaptive benefits and maladaptive consequences. This approach provides opportunities to evaluate and to chart better ways to respond to life's challenges. I utilize a psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral approach with an emphasis on increasing awareness of one's reactions and experiences.

My approach to therapy is "integrative," meaning that I draw from several different types of therapy (psychodynamic, interpersonal, cognitive behavioral, client-centered, family systems) to find what will best meet your needs.
If you are thinking about counseling or therapy, chances are you are in distress, feeling not like yourself, or are looking for help in dealing with a difficult situation. You also probably want to find a therapist who is going to understand you and who has experience dealing with the problems and concerns that you are facing. I hope that through this page and my website, you can find information that helps you decide if you and I may be a good match to work together to help you find solutions to your problems and feel better.

In my work with clients I work from an integrative style of therapy, drawing from many theoretical approaches to issues, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, client-centered, family dynamic, and existential philosophies to form a safe, comfortable, productive environment for growth and change.
It can be a hard decision to make to decide that you need to talk with someone, and be just as daunting to actually make that first appointment. You want someone who will be understanding and insightful, as well as challenging. You want someone who will be empathic and knowledgeable, with whom you can feel comfortable to talk, and know that you're speaking in confidence. I work with a wide range of challenges, including: Tension and stress, depression and mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, life changes, difficulties coping, panic, phobia, sleep problems, social phobia, and family stressors.

My approach is eclectic, incorporating psychodynamic, relational, trauma, somatic and mindfulness-based theories and techniques to support your therapy.
Please note that I am currently not able to accept new clients at this time. Therapy, at its core is about self-discovery. Through a process of curious and compassionate inquiry into the truth of our situation, we gain insights that open space to unencumber ourselves. Often, what we had initially seen as problems can dissolve altogether. I like working with people whose lives have reached an impasse where they need to generate new options to untangle their dilemma. What we need to realize is that the predicament is, ultimately, the doorway to a greater understanding and fulfillment of our lives, both inner and outer.

Psychodynamic, EMDR, and AEDP approaches give me a framework for listening and making sense of what I hear.
In psychotherapy, we work together to understand the meaning of your symptoms and the sources of your pain. The therapeutic process is in large part a careful encounter with the past in the hope of getting beyond what happened to you and discovering who you are apart from your history. It also includes the exploration of your beliefs, emotions, protective strategies, recurring patterns, and relationship dynamics. From a stance of compassion and curiosity, we put words to your experience and what has been unsayable before.

I use several schools of knowledge to inform my practice, including psychodynamic, psychoanalytic and cognitive therapies, Buddhist, Taoist and existential philosophies, and addiction recovery.
Psychotherapy can help us understand ourselves, our histories, patterns and relationships. It is a tool that can increase clarity and direction so that we can move more confidently in the world. We are a complex mixture of our experiences, the relationships most significant to us, what we think about ourselves, the stories we tell ourselves, and how we view our purpose or place. With this in mind, I aim to do a few specific things in my therapist role: To think about how we have come to be *who* we are, to accept this, and to create space within ourselves where we might exercise new or different ways of being.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Psychodynamic therapy in Rochester, also known as insight-oriented therapy, evolved from Freudian psychoanalysis. Like adherents of psychoanalysis, psychodynamic therapists believe that bringing the unconscious into conscious awareness promotes insight and resolves conflict. But psychodynamic therapy is briefer and less intensive than psychoanalysis and also focuses on the relationship between the therapist and the client, as a way to learn about how the client relates to everyone in their life.
