By drawing upon psychodynamic, mentalization, and somatic (body) experience techniques, my clients are better able to create fundamental connections between their mind and body and, with time, newfound awareness that leads to change and personal growth.
Sometimes we arrive at a place in our lives where we feel that we are continually pulling on the ends of a knot. Instead of untangling, the knot becomes tighter. In a safe space designed to encourage reflection, we will unpack current difficulties and long-standing issues in the context of past experiences. All of us are impacted by our upbringing, and if we can begin to understand these experiences and how they affect the roles we play in the world, then we are at an undeniable advantage for improving our well-being.

I mostly use a mix of psychoanalytic, psychodynamic, and motivational interviewing.
“Hurt people, hurt people.” This is a saying that you may have heard; I believe it. Although not always intentional or malicious, people who are hurting, hurt others. To upend this cyclical pattern, we must engage in the healing process. There is healing power in talking, which is one of the reasons why I’m a therapist. I work with Black and Brown folks seeking support in dealing with challenges they are facing. I'm big on identifying and confronting the traumas we've endured to heal and limit the adverse effects on the people in our lives. You may be hurting (we all are). Healed people, heal people; let’s do the work together.

My approach is generally psychodynamic.
WHY THERAPY? Finding a therapist or counselor can be an anxiety-provoking pursuit. In my experience, people seek treatment for a wide variety of reasons, such as depression, anxiety/stress, relationship problems, parenting difficulties, low self-esteem, and so on. Seeking therapy is an act of maturity and strength! It says that you recognize that you are unhappy or dissatisfied with some aspect of your life and that you ultimately want to function and feel better.

My clinical approach is guided by humanistic and psychodynamic perspectives, while drawing from cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, and practical coping strategies.
The challenges we face in life can often feel isolating, but you don't have to go through it alone. It's often intimidating to not feel okay because our emotional difficulties can collide with our overall wellbeing, relationships, or career. The reason that brought you here matters and could be the start towards creating lasting personal growth and change. Together we will give voice to your struggles, explore your experiences, understand past traumas, while reinforcing your strengths and wellbeing. My style is warm and collaborative, and I am committed to provide a safe space where my clients feel seen, understood, and accepted.

I take an intersectional/psychodynamic approach in understanding patients, as we work through intimate & layered matters, to overcome the challenges that brought you to therapy to begin with.
Often, people arrive to therapy after several attempts at navigating life’s problems: losses, relationships, thinking/behaviors, on their own and through other venues. These struggles undoubtedly impact one’s wellbeing and sense of purpose. I will approach our work from a collaborative place, providing safety and support as we engage in the challenging yet transformative task of identifying those patterns that interfere with our ability to live life fully.

My training has been in a psychodynamic modality.
As a licensed clinical psychologist, I work with people to help increase their awareness of thoughts, feelings and behaviors -- such as fear, sadness and anger-- that can hold them back from being fully engaged in the world. I try to create an environment that will encourage curiosity and help you garner insight into the situations that may cause you to act in ways that feel unproductive. We will work to find news ways to think, feel and respond.

I believe that each of us has the potential to experience wholeness. Many of us, early on, were forced to exile parts of ourselves, leaving us feeling constricted, fragmented, less than whole. One element of my work is helping people reclaim these lost aspects of self. Using an experiential psychodynamic approach I help people to deal with problematic issues from their current lives as well as to process difficult experiences from their past.

I practice mainly through a psychodynamic lens and integrate humanistic-existential and cognitive behavioral therapy.
My work with individuals begins with establishing an emotionally safe space in which we can explore what brings you into therapy. We then tailor our work to your specific issues and needs, be they contemporary stressors or long standing vestiges of the past -- or both. We may discover core conflicts, psychic remnants of past relationships and experiences, that contribute to your current symptoms or show up in your life as self-defeating patterns in your relationships. Re-working these past struggles can help release you from feeling emotionally trapped, so that you have greater freedom and authorship in your life.

I have completed post-graduate training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and have extensive experience working with depression, anxiety, addiction, grief/loss, and chronic illness (particularly HIV & AIDS).
Beginning or resuming psychotherapy is a deeply personal choice that is often met with complicated and sometimes even conflicting emotions. I believe that in order for people to make the best use of psychotherapy, they need to feel respected, safe, and supported within the therapeutic relationship. This lays the foundation upon which one can better understand themselves and in turn grow. My practice aims to assist people with improving the quality of their interpersonal relationships, deepening their understanding of the familial/relational context in which they were raised, and living a more fulfilling life.

I use a client-centered, feminist perspective supported by anti-racist and anti-oppressive modalities through narrative and psychodynamic interventions.
The struggles many of us face today can lead to feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and hopelessness. Even with the various uncontrollable factors that impact each of our lives, we have a tendency to blame ourselves for our emotional experiences. My goal as a Mental Health Counselor is to create a supportive and accountable space for you to process and heal the wounds against your self-concept that keep you from engaging in authentic self-exploration. Our traumas from childhood, relationships, oppressive systems of power, and various other sources often have a significant impact on the ways we navigate our individual realities.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Psychodynamic therapy in New York, also known as insight-oriented therapy, evolved from Freudian psychoanalysis. Like adherents of psychoanalysis, psychodynamic therapists believe that bringing the unconscious into conscious awareness promotes insight and resolves conflict. But psychodynamic therapy is briefer and less intensive than psychoanalysis and also focuses on the relationship between the therapist and the client, as a way to learn about how the client relates to everyone in their life.
