My preferred therapeutic process and techniques are rooted in both psychodynamic and cognitive/behavioral models.
What we know for sure is that life is beautifully complex. No one is exempt from new challenges, life transitions, pain or conflict. While past experiences influence the present, what happens to you does not have to dictate your overall quality of life. Emotional wellness requires dedicated attention and a commitment to being and doing better. When we begin to see challenges as purposeful moments urging us to learn, heal, grow and evolve, we can begin to accept, and even honor, our circumstances. How do you do that? Well, my goal is to empower you by providing guidance, tools and insights to lead an emotionally healthy life.

For adolescents and adults, my foundational orientation is Person-Centered Therapy, and I integrate techniques from Psychodynamic, CBT, and Emotionally Focused Therapy.
I believe that each individual has a unique story and experiences and that the counselor’s role is to partner with clients to help them achieve their unique goals, heal from past hurts, and realize their truest selves. I primarily utilize Person-Centered Psychotherapy; however, I appreciate and incorporate Psychodynamic, Existential, Child-Centered Play Therapy, and Emotion Focused Couples Therapy. I work with children (ages 5+), adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I utilize Child-Centered Play Therapy to assist children as they experience social, emotional, and relational challenges.

When we experience trauma, we are often left feeling alone, misunderstood, invisible, and unsafe, even within ourselves. Through the process of therapy, we can regain hope, connection, safety, and understanding of ourselves and others. I use wide-range of evidenced-based modalities, from psychodynamic and CBT to EMDR and somatic therapies to decrease the emotional reactivity, tension, and isolation that trauma can create. Regardless of our trauma histories, our modern world can contribute to feelings of disconnection, dissatisfaction, and uncertainty about our worth and our purpose.

For many of life’s issues, it is helpful to talk with someone within a nonjudgmental, safe environment. To be listened to and heard in a way that facilitates an understanding of what the underlying origin of the problem is in order to bring about healing. Kimberly uses the psychodynamic approach to counseling as a means to assist clients with understanding themselves more deeply. Serving adults, couples and adolescents, she collaborates with the client to address patterns and behaviors that disrupt wellbeing.

I draw particularly from psychodynamic and relational treatment approaches, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness.
How content are you with life in the present? Is there pain in your past? Do you desire a deeper relationship with yourself and others? Perhaps you simply feel "stuck?" I believe I can help. As a therapist, I see my role as walking along side you as you journey through life's peaks and valleys, helping to unshackle you from your past, so that you are empowered to more fully enjoy life in the present. My treatment approach is tailored to clients' individual needs and is built on a foundation of honesty, compassion, non-judgment, and genuine relationship. I work collaboratively and prioritize making therapy a safe space to grow.

A candidate at the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas in Chapel Hill, Dr. Boyce has a deep appreciation of the complexities of the mind as well as the impact of early experiences and relationships. Psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theories offer a comprehensive understanding of human nature. As opposed to other models that try to solve a particular problem or target symptoms, psychoanalysis gets to the heart of the matter. Dr. Boyce provides therapy that addresses the whole person, helping the individual to develop inner capacities that can improve relationships as well as foster a richer, more meaningful life.

No two therapeutic journeys are alike. They reflect the unique interactions of the individuals involved in the process. Therapist and patient enter into a relationship through which, when things go well, "more" becomes possible: more life, more love, more play, more feelings, more thought, more choice, more reflection. Specializing in work with adult survivors of childhood & adolescent sexual abuse, I combine psychodynamic, developmental, and trauma perspectives. The past can truly become past and the present freed to become reflective of the genuine talents, hopes, yearnings of the person with whom I journey.

I have an eclectic approach to counseling, though my tendency is to understand clients through a psychodynamic lens.
You don't have to suffer in silence. Counseling can offer a safe space to reclaim what anxiety, depression or trauma may have stolen from you. I am passionate about providing people with space to share their story, and I am always working to fine-tune my ability to fully hear and respond to that story. My ultimate goal as a counselor is to help people move toward insight, authenticity, and connectedness.

There is no greater joy (for me) than helping individuals to overcome mental and emotional barriers/ traumas that impede overall health & well-being. I believe that we are the “Author of our story” and our personal voyage is to own the "Pen" that writes “Our” story. It is important that my clients are provided a safe space, free of judgement, and are given an environment to express themselves. I am committed as a Clinical Therapist to create an emotional environment where change and healing is possible.

There are moments in our lives when we need someone to hear our personal story because it feels too overwhelming to be contained. I passionately believe people are capable of investigating, with help, their areas of emotional discomfort and self-doubts. My skill as a therapist is assisting individuals in authentically discovering their hidden stories while honoring their uniqueness. I offer the safe environment and genuine respect needed to imagine healing mind, body and spirit. People can then begin a process of making new choices and trying out new life skills.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Psychodynamic therapy in Charlotte, also known as insight-oriented therapy, evolved from Freudian psychoanalysis. Like adherents of psychoanalysis, psychodynamic therapists believe that bringing the unconscious into conscious awareness promotes insight and resolves conflict. But psychodynamic therapy is briefer and less intensive than psychoanalysis and also focuses on the relationship between the therapist and the client, as a way to learn about how the client relates to everyone in their life.
