I practice a psychodynamic insight-oriented approach which is gaining insight into how we relate to others.
I believe that psychotherapy is very useful in connecting deeply with oneself and subsequently with others. Anxiety and depression are often related to faulty coping mechanisms developed in childhood that lead to painful relationships. Being happy in work and love are the pillars of a rewarding and fulfilled life and therapy makes this possible.

Hello, my name is Michelle. I believe therapy is a time to examine internalized experiences that shape our perspectives and behaviors. Engaging in introspective work together can challenge us to reframe maladaptive thoughts. I aim to assist clients with managing emotional dysregulation and symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, and trauma in a safe, nonjudgmental space. I hope to foster growth and strengthen coping skills during difficult transitional points in a person’s life.

You might be coping with anxiety and stress that disrupts your quality of life, trying to heal from adverse life experiences, adjusting to a big change, or grieving a loss that carries a lot of significance and impact. You’re here because you’re looking for a safe, supportive, judgment free space to show up as yourself. You’ve tried traditional talk therapy but need something more. You’re ready to shed behaviors, feelings, and ways of thinking that no longer work for you. You’re motivated for a life that is infused with authenticity, purpose and connection.

Finding the right therapist is difficult, isn't it? So hard to tell from reading the profile if she will be a good match for you. Perhaps you are asking yourself questions like "Do I really want to do this?", "Can I speak freely to a stranger?", "How do I know she will understand me and my issues?", or "How does therapy work?" It's understandable to have reservations. Call/e-mail me to set up a free, no obligation session and we can address your concerns. You'll be able to tell if you feel safe and heard.

What's wrong with this relationship? The same problems keep on repeating time after time. So what does a study of psychology reveal? A well-trained and experienced psychotherapist can help to shine a light into the dark unconscious places which shroud the mysteries. This helps to bring the issues into consciousness, and once there, allows you to work with them. This work involves change. There may be many underlying issues including: mental states of anxiety and depression, an addiction, anger, lack of trust, various stressors, poor communication, extended family interferences, and more.

We all have a unique journey in life, as individuals and as couples, and I believe that our resilience is as unique as our journey. I work with clients to help them overcome distressing cycles that make them feel stuck and empower them to find stability, create healthier relationships and live an enriched life. Together we explore underlying emotions and find new ways of coping with past traumas, difficult life transitions, loss, relational distress and other mental health issues. While EMDR, mindfulness and cultural sensitivity are at the core of my practice, I also integrate Psychodynamic and CBT interventions.

I employ cognitive-behavioral, family systems, psychodynamic, short-term solution focus, supportive reflection, dialectical behavior, grief and loss therapy, and mindfulness models in my practice.
There is nothing like being listened to and understood on a deep level, with genuine interest, unconditional positive regard, congruence, empathy and acceptance. This is what I strive to offer in therapy, as we explore together your hopes and dreams, your losses and regrets, your longings and fears. Many people come to therapy to free themselves from self-defeating patterns, maladaptive behaviors and the legacy of past traumas, so they can be more truly themselves in relation to others and live with greater satisfaction and meaning.

I use the relational psychoanalytic approach, a collaborative style of psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Psychotherapy is a space to make meaning of your unique life experiences and explore—with a collaborative listener, a thought partner—how you can live differently. A compassionate and deep understanding of self allows you to live fuller and more satisfying lives, not bound by old patterns. My goal is to help you understand how your mind works, digest difficult experiences, and develop the capacity to build and maintain enriching relationships with others and yourself. We will be listening to your mind and body in depth, including aspects that are not readily available to us. Understanding your mind in this way can be transformative.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
