I work with clients who are seeking to explore and understand how their past experiences, relationships, family dynamics, etc. are currently impacting them. It's difficult to break unhealthy and unproductive patterns that were modeled and taught to you. It often takes an outside perspective to recognize and understand how this is contributing to anxiety, depression, stress, feeling disconnected from oneself and others and much more. My goal is to help clients feel unburdened by their past and feel empowered in all areas of their life.

I consider the foundation of good therapy to rest on a warm, trusting and collaborative relationship between therapist and client. Together we will work to better understand the issues bringing you to therapy and explore ways in which you can both gain more personal insight and improve your life. My goal is to provide individualized psychotherapy treatment that is integrative, holistic, and strength-based. I recognize that starting therapy takes courage and I therefore work to foster a therapy space where you are truly and authentically heard and valued.

I am also EMDR trained, and integrate Mindfulness, Feminist Theory, Psychodynamic, and ACT interventions.
I specialize in working with individuals and couples to explore dating, relationship patterns, attachment, and trauma. I'm especially passionate in supporting the queer community. Together, we work to identify and examine recurring patterns with care and curiosity. In individual work, this can look like exploring your early experiences that informed your attachment style and connecting these patterns to the way you show up or abandon yourself today. In relationship therapy, we bring awareness to the dynamic between partners these individual experiences create to deepen connection, enhance vulnerability, and improve communication.

My practice is grounded in a psychodynamic theory, which seeks to bring conscious awareness to psychological processes that contribute to emotional pain and relationship problems.
I have nearly a decade of experience working with teens, emerging adults, adults, and couples with a diverse range of identity intersections and presenting concerns. My approach to psychotherapy is multidimensional. This allows for some flexibility and creativity in order to meet the diverse needs individuals bring to therapy and in their lives. One common denominator is creating a safe and positive relationship between therapist and client. This is the foundation of good psychotherapy.

I primarily use cognitive behavioral therapy and draw from other theories, including multicultural, feminist, and psychodynamic.
My therapy approach is open and honest. I show up as both a human and psychologist, and do not emphasize a professional power hierarchy. I am an advocate for racial justice, LGBTQ+ equality and rights, and human rights more broadly. I am not value neutral on such topics. It is important for my clients to know that my full-time job is as an Assistant Professor of Practice at University of Denver’s Counseling Psychology Program where I teach and supervise students learning to be therapists. Therefore, my private practice is part-time and I have limited flexibility for scheduling.

I have been trained in traditional psychodynamic therapy as well as cognitive-behavioral approach.
I will offer each new client a free initial consultation. My philosophy from working as a psychologist for over 25 years is that the relationship and trust between a client and therapist is an extremely important part of the healing process. You will find that I am a very good listener. My clients describe me as warm, compassionate, clear, caring, experienced and they have found our work together extremely helpful in their lives. I work Saturdays and Thursday (later afternoon and evening).

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
