My general approach to counseling is short-term and solution-focused with special attention to the working alliance, emotional dynamics, articulating values and constructing meaning, I am also trained in gestalt techniques, clinical hypno-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic, art therapy, psychodrama, motivational interviewing, CBT, and ACT.
I graduated from a M.S. mental health counseling program at Eastern Washington University in 1995, got certified and ran a private practice in Seattle from 1995 through 2003. I worked in an outpatient community clinic, an inpatient psychiatric hospital, at retreat centers, and at a college counseling center until starting work on a PhD in Religious Studies and Psychology. I worked, studied, and lived in Europe, East Asia, and Africa before teaching 10 years at San Jose State University, so I am comfortable and confident working with very different sorts of people and I want everyone and anyone to feel welcome and at ease in my care.

I hold a theoretical scaffolding of Jungian, psychodynamic and soul orientation in my work.
I believe in the healing force within each person and its natural inclination to arc towards wholeness and health. If we want it enough, have patience, clarity and support we can heal and feel freedom in life. Growth happens best in relationship and I am here to support you on your path, wherever that might be. I am anchored in Jungian psychology, Existentialism and AEDP/Somatic work. More importantly, I try to cultivate a sense of warmth, care, respect and curiosity in my work with clients. I work with clients experiencing: anxiety, depression, grief, relationship/family issues, PTSD, self-criticism and lack of meaning.

Do you struggle with feelings of anxiety, depression, guilt or low self-esteem? Do you find yourself avoiding social engagements or so preoccupied with excessive worrying? Finding ways to navigate these difficult feelings can help you get back on track. I use a psychodynamic approach and CBT that focuses on uncovering patterns of behavior and ways of relating to ourselves and others that are often outside of our awareness. I also consider how our past impacts who we are today. Through acceptance and empathy, we will establish a trusting therapeutic relationship and work together toward your personal growth and self-discovery.

I work within a psychodynamic and narrative approach; however, I also find great value in attachment therapy and believe object relations can be very useful to some.
My name is Stephanie Banning, and I am a licensed LMFT. I have spent the last 15y+ working with individuals struggling with addiction/recovery in a variety of capacities, including substance abuse and eating disorders. Due to the nature of my specialties, I have developed expertise in working with mood disorders and OCD. I believe in meeting an individual where they are at, and that trauma looks differently to everyone because you cannot see someone's mental health.

Relationships move us, give us life, and can even suck the life out of us. We were made for them. That is why I specialize in them - relationships with friends, family, colleagues, ourselves, our higher power. Properly realigning these problematic, strained, estranged relationships transforms your suffering into purposeful, worthwhile living. Ultimately your fullest life is my goal as your therapist. The greatest gift you can bring to your relationships is you. The best gift you can give the world is your relationships. What will you choose to do with these two important aspects of your one life?

For many people, standard 12 step-dominated substance use treatment does not work. People may tell you that your problem is a lack of willingness, or that you are in "denial." But maybe you need someone to listen to you rather than talk at you. The fact that these programs do not work for you does not mean that you are not capable of change. It probably just means that you have not found an approach that addresses your individual needs and values.

I am humbled as I grow both personally and professionally while learning the depth of the human condition. We're all going through something. I enjoy treating couples and adult individuals that are wanting to deepen their inner awareness and have an expressed desire to connect further within their intimate relationships. The couple relationship, the way in which you emotionally connect, express yourself, and grow, is one of the hardest but most rewarding things someone can commit to. Being vulnerable enough to allow both yourself and someone else to love you is hard, but also the birthplace of fulfillment, compassion, and empathy.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
