With a background in depth and transpersonal psychology, I utilize an integrative approach, drawing upon multiple psychological modalities including psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapy, family systems, mindfulness strategies, Buddhist psychology, and transtheoretical therapy. Utilizing these approaches is an important part of helping my clients grow towards self-understanding, self-reliance and emotional soothing. In addition, clients develop the ability to be more at ease and compassionate with themselves while being less reactive to their negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

I work with clients on issues ranging from depression, anxiety, OCD, addiction to relationship, career and identity issues and I work with couples. I’ve had a specialty in hair pulling and skin picking since 2001: See my website.  I use many theories in my work—psychodynamic, Jungian dreamwork and mindfulness practice to name a few—but my style is existential humanistic, working in the present. I see the ultimate goal as supporting you in living from an authentic, empowered place, feeling a sense of inner security, hearing and trusting your true inner voice—not the inner critic—and having a strong sense of self to guide you in life.

While my primary approach is psychodynamic, I also utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy interventions as needed.
I treat clients with a variety of problems that impact their relationships, functioning, and personal growth. My areas of emphasis include depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD/trauma recovery, workplace stress, life and career transitions, and creative issues/artist support (I work with many entertainment professionals). We collaborate to explore how past and present relationships and experiences reflect unconscious patterns that may impede us, make it difficult to stop our impulses, or cause suffering. The goal is to alleviate symptoms and to help people live healthier lives and make more meaningful connections with others.

I have acquired extensive training with evidence based treatments and work from a psychodynamic, mindfulness based, and cognitive-behavioral therapeutic orientation.
Make time for yourself today. Painful symptoms from depression, anxiety, and/or relationship problems can cause great difficulty as we try to navigate through daily life. You don't have to go through difficult times alone. Talking about what you are experiencing is the first step to feeling better. I listen carefully and openly to current and past struggles to help promote self-awareness and understanding. I work closely with my clients to alleviate problematic symptoms and promote overall well-being.

I primarily work from a contemporary psychodynamic perspective, which allows me to integrate the complex interplay of cultural and environmental influences with individual intrapsychic and interpersonal concerns.
My approach to therapy is grounded in the belief that emotional well-being develops within the context of supportive and positive relationships. With a focus on collaboration, I seek to create a nurturing environment that allows for a deepened sense of connection to oneself and others. Participating in the therapeutic process often leads to an expanded capacity to draw upon internal resources to manage strong emotions and navigate complex relationships.

My orientation is based in the foundations of Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic therapy.
I offer a warm, honest partnership for anyone who is struggling emotionally. People come in feeling alone in some way: overwhelmed, unfulfilled, blocked creatively or convinced that everyone else in the world is different from them. Or, maybe you are grieving the break-up of a relationship, marriage, or the death of someone close. Feeling alone in your pain is often the worst part.

My proclivity is psychodynamic, exploring root causes, tempered by an integrative client-centered approach with cognitive-behavioral applications.
I grew up in a small steel mill town in Ohio. I earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University in the nascent field of Psycholinguistics. Upon graduation I moved to West Hollywood and became an activist in its inception as the “first gay city in the US”. I’m proud to have been a catalyst for inclusion in a business operation that had been a bastion for exclusivity where I opened doors without regard to race, sexuality, gender identity, or abledness. My Practice reflects that inclusivity. I see primarily Adult Individuals; as well as young adults & teens; ranging in age from 14yo thru + +; and Couples .

I conceptualize patients from a psychodynamic/psychoanalytic perspective, which means discovering how childhood conflicts are re-enacted in relationships, work circumstances, and perceptions of self and experiences in the world.
I want to help people discover, think about, give meaning to, and find compassion for, alienated parts of themselves that are repressed and forbidden, containing unmet needs, historic conflicts, and unfulfilled dreams. Reunion with these parts can help people better understand their current behaviors, thoughts, and feelings and develop options for changing old patterns in their relationships with themselves, partners, and work that were once effective defenses against psychological pain. Therapy helps us become more fully alive, creative, connected to others, and free to be ourselves with less, and perhaps more realistic, fear-- individually, in our families, cultures, and society.

I work from a psychodynamic perspective, with additional specialized training in EMDR, Grief Counseling, and EFT.
I believe that our journeys, through life's experiences and struggles, make us who we are. My own life's journey has led me to my career as a psychotherapist, which allows me the opportunity, honor, and privilege, to work together with my clients to realize their own strengths, limitations, and to identify and achieve their goals. I believe this can take place, within a strong therapeutic relationship, built on non-judgment, trust, safety, and compassion.

I therefore combine in-depth exploration, utilizing psychodynamic/psychoanalytic curiosity, with directive skills use like skills elements from DBT.
Wether you struggle to restore perspective, calm and balance in your life, attempt to heal trauma, depression and anxiety, or seek to discover and pursue greater potential and purpose, I offer a safe, open, curious and non-judgemental place to do just that. Everything you think, feel, do and experience actually makes complete sense - we simply may need some time to understand and appreciate why it does. This growing awareness allows for better design of a life with purposeful future and relief from the past, offering real, actual choice rather than the apparent choice in repetitive, automatic and unconscious routines.

I use a combination of psychodynamic, interpersonal, therapy.
Many have lives where we wear many hats; home, career, relationships, family, and it can become overwhelming. When life adds stressors, it can make managing the hats difficult. I work with clients to take control of their lives by learning to set boundaries and discover the best versions of themselves, no matter what life has handed them in their pasts or in the present. My goal is for each person to learn why they are the way they are, learn how to progress through life, choose different paths, change patterns and behaviors to find a hopeful, peaceful sense of self.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
