My approach includes elements of attachment theory, relational and family systems, and psychodynamic therapy.
We do not become who we are in a vacuum, but instead develop in relation to our family, culture, and context. We may not be responsible for the experiences that shape us, but we can take responsibility for how they impact us moving forward. Pursuing therapy is an important step towards developing an understanding of and appreciation for your past while putting yourself in the driver's seat for how you move forward. I work with people from a variety of backgrounds and enjoy helping clients increase their confidence and self-awareness to achieve greater fulfillment in life.

I typically integrate methods from a variety of research-supported therapies including cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavior therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Life's problems can feel much more difficult when faced alone. Perhaps you are struggling with a painful loss, are overwhelmed by fear, anger, loneliness or depression. You may be stuck in patterns of negative, self-critical thinking and inner pressure may cause you to feel tense and exhausted. You may feel shame and hopelessness and your means of coping such as avoidance, procrastination, withdrawal or overeating adds to your distress. I help people struggling with anxiety, panic, depression, phobias, eating issues, and relationship distress to understand these problems and develop skills to feel better and create happier lives.

I use a short-term psychodynamic method of treatment (ISTDP) that achieves a better self-understanding of one's mental life, and leads to psychological health.
My practice provides caring and sensitive treatment for mental, emotional and behavioral problems. My approach draws upon many years of extensive experience. It builds upon each patient's strengths, while improving interpersonal and emotional skills. My therapy is personalized, recognizing that each patient is a unique individual with his or her own very personal history and issues. My goal is to help my patients in achieving an awareness and understanding of the sources of their psychological problems, and then help them work through those problems so they can feel better about themselves and lead healthier and happier lives.

As an integrative therapist I combine tools from cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, interpersonal, and mood regulation therapies. I treat adults and older adolescents battling mood, anxiety, eating, interpersonal and life transition challenges. I consider treatment options as they relate to a patient's needs given the empirical support available. I find the psychotherapy process to be most effective when done collaboratively. For the past 22 years in addition to maintaining a private practice, I worked as a Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford's Department of Psychiatry until July 2015. I was trained at UCLA (Ph.D) and at Oregon Health Sciences University (post-doctoral fellowship).

I believe in an integrative approach to psychotherapy, whereby I combine tools from cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, psychodynamic, and mood regulation therapies.
I create a safe and nurturing therapeutic space for adults, couples & teens who are facing major life transitions such as college, career, divorce, or personal loss in finding a joyful and fulfilling path forward. I also provide empathetic guidance to the “sandwich generation” – women and men who are raising children while also caring for their elderly parents and struggling with anxiety and depression as they attempt to juggle it all. I help families navigate the complexities of raising children, adolescents and emerging adults in a healthy, cohesive way.

I have been working with children, teens and adults for over 20 years in private practice. Prior to that, I worked in schools and at counseling agencies. I see clients of all ages using a combined approach of Cognitive Behavior and Psychodynamic therapies. However, I recognize that one size does not fit all when it comes to therapy, so I tailor my approach to the individual needs of each client.

Is there a part of you that feels like something is missing? Like you’re not in touch with your full self or even your ‘true’ self? Perhaps meaning feels distant and your emotional inner world feels difficult to put words to. When these troubling feelings and thoughts arise, life asks us to slow down and get to the root of the issue. In therapy we will do just that. Whether you are working through a difficult relationship, experiencing paralyzing existential dread, or emotional pain manifesting in your body, you deserve the space to get to know yourself on a deeper level and allow for a much needed deep emotional release.

Relationships can be hard. Partners struggle with communication, conflicting parenting styles, sexual expressions... Life's challenges, hurtful fights, history of trauma or infidelity make it difficult to sustain trust and closeness. How can you create desired connections, and not lose yourself in the process? How can you be true both to self and to your partnership? I invite you to explore these questions together with empathy and curiosity, letting go of habitual judgments, self-deprecation, and shame. I work with individuals, couples, and families. Both traditional and alternative lifestyles are welcome, and no issue is a taboo.

I'm a Psychologist with an Integrative perspective, comfortable working with a variety of types of people and problems from a variety of perspectives. It is as important to be able to work towards change in the present, as it is to revisit and understand how one's developmental history may be influencing present issues or repeating patterns. I have found truths in many theoretical approaches, and as much from studies outside of Psychology as within it.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
