Therapy is a way of approaching those life challenges that sometimes appear overwhelming or confusing. By putting words to those feelings, you can begin to unravel patterns of behavior, relationship dynamics and decision making processes, thus allowing for meaningful change. Therapy takes place in a supportive, non-judgmental space where you are able to reflect on your concerns by exploring the thoughts and feelings you are experiencing. Treatment is based on your singular circumstances, utiliziing a psychodynamic, trauma informed approach.

The buzzwords associated with my specific approach are: psychodynamic, humanistic, relational, somatic/body-based, and skills-based.
To me, therapy is a team sport. I'm there to help create a space and relationship where you feel safe exploring the things that are happening in your life. Maybe that thing is identity exploration, depression or anxiety that just won't quit, or figuring out how survive and then thrive after a big trauma. All of this is big stuff. I'm here to help you hold it and find a way through it. I have plenty of tools that I can bring to bear (questions, coping skills training, identifying patterns, and reframing situations), but ultimately, my approach centers around you and what you need to be successful, however you define success.

Grounded in a psychodynamic approach, I draw on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), existential therapy, narrative therapy, mindfulness, and somatically rooted therapies to meet the unique needs of each client.
Throughout life, there are many challenges and decisions to navigate while we process and learn from our own experiences. How we make sense of them and give experiences meaning is crucial in moving from feeling stuck towards being fully authentic and present in life. Together, we can work through barriers and move towards a place of self-compassion. I work with adults experiencing life transitions, chronic pain, ADHD, depression, anxiety, and self esteem concerns. My own background as a musician informs my approach to working with performance anxiety as well as my interest in working with other creatives and performing artists.

We offer insight-oriented psychotherapy (“psychodynamic therapy”) for those looking to deepen their understanding of themselves and their relationships.
Often, people come to us without having explored psychological concerns in a sophisticated way. If they had past therapy, they were at times disappointed that it did not go deeper, as it left the greater meaning (the "roots") of their symptoms unexplored. As psychodynamic therapists, however, our goal is to see comprehensively, with thoughtful attention to the subtle depths and intricacies of your experience. In so doing, we can help to both resolve symptoms and impart meaning to your experiences, even those thoughts, feelings, and emotions that are often deemed painful or meaningless.

Along with Gottman, I use a psychodynamic approach to increase insight while using solution-based approaches to provide tangible coping skills for managing day to day.
I believe that growth and change are possible - but also - you might be exactly where you need to be in your life. Perhaps you just need to create more space for your authentic self to exist and grow. Working with both individuals and couples, I believe that a healthy relationship with ourself and others is an important part of our well-being. In addition to 1:1 therapy, I am a Level 2 Gottman trained couples therapist who specializes in helping couples strengthen connection, build intimacy, learn direct and loving communication skills and hone conflict management skills to help repair and connect more deeply in relationships.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
