I was trained in traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy, but have advanced training in other modalities that I incorporate as needed depending on the individual treatment goals.
I am a clinical psychologist in private practice in East Midtown Manhattan and White Plains. I received training at NYU, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, and St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center. After completing my training, I spent sevent years on the full-time faculty at the Weill Cornell Medical College, where I treated children and adults and supervised psychology and psychiatry trainees. I work with adolescents, adults, couples and families with a variety of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and trauma.

My theoretical orientation is eclectic and integrative incorporating interpersonal process therapy (IPT) (here and now), psychodynamic, relational and CBT models. I approach therapy from a strengths based approach, focusing on client’s inherent strengths and resiliencies rather than their weaknesses. I also utilize CBT to focus on changing negative core beliefs and cognitive distortions and DBT to teach distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal assertiveness skills. Lastly, I am very relational in my approach in order to provide clients with a corrective emotional experience and holding environment for them to feel safe, secure, empowered and validated.

I utilize a blend of psychodynamic and behavioral approaches with both couples and individuals.
Perhaps you are in a transitional phase, feeling unsettled, confused, frustrated, lonely or in grief. Or there may be active addiction, disordered eating or body image issues, family stress, estrangement, relational conflicts or infidelity. Or, you are struggling and don't understand why. My professional experience is varied and spans 40 years. However, it is this role as a therapist that blends it together beautifully with my life experience and extensive training to serve my clients. Therapy can be life-changing, and you deserve to thrive, accept what is unchangeable, change what is, and feel at ease with yourself and others.

My therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing from behavioral, relational, and psychodynamic modalities.
I am a licensed psychologist who specializes in the treatment of disordered eating, body image dissatisfaction, and mood and anxiety disorders. I work best with clients who are open to a Health At Every Size approach and/or who are in a more sustained eating disorder recovery. I strive to create a warm, compassionate, non-judgmental environment where we can work collaboratively on healing unresolved issues, strengthening your sense of self, and helping you live your fullest life now.

I am a couples and individual therapist that works from a psychodynamic/relational lens, while also incorporating IFS, Humanistic and ACT.
My goal as a clinician is to provide safety and assurance as you navigate the journey of emotional healing. I encourage you to bring your whole self into the room - the parts you’re proud of, and the parts you prefer to ignore. There is no need to "have it all figured out." All I ask is that you remain open and curious to the known and unknown parts of yourself. Through this process, you will begin to better understand yourself and live a life worth living.

I employ cognitive-behavioral techniques if there is an immediate need for symptom relief, but would move towards psychodynamic principles if there is a need to address the root cause of a psychological and/or emotional distress.
I have experience working with issues such as domestic violence, trauma, parenting, life transitions, addictions, anxiety, depression, and coping with mental illness. While I employ a variety of interventions, my understanding is that there are universal elements in my approach to therapy. First, the relationship between the client and the therapist would be a crucial focus of therapy. Second, there is an emphasis on the here and now, but he would never neglect someone's personal history, especially if they are affecting the present. Thirdly, goal setting would be a crucial part of therapy.

I stay informed with cutting edge trauma modalities and utilize these most often: Internal Family Systems (IFS), psychodynamic, Brainspotting, and EMDR.
What does unresolved trauma do to us? Are you feeling numb, shut down or agitated and on high alert? If this resonates, most of us have experienced a traumatic event - what makes the difference in how you recover is the kind of support you have in your life. Experiencing trauma, abuse or neglect often leaves us with fewer internal resources to deal with the impact. This can lead to unhealthy ways of dealing with the pain such as addictions, depression, destructive relationships, isolation. Using modern therapy modalities (IFS), I can help you process your pain and find joy again. Please reach out, let me help guide you to healing.

While psychodynamic in nature, I utilize behavioral therapies (ACT and DBT) to help a person feel heard and continue to grow.
Life can be difficult--sometimes, unnecessarily hard. People do their best to cope with challenges, but often these coping strategies are destructive, hindering our emotional health and interpersonal relations. I specialize in depression, relationship issues, anxiety, and substance and behavioral addictions. Ideally, I can help you find your true self, and through this journey you can begin to discover what you truly deserve in life.

When my clients first come to me, their lives feel chaotic and out of control. No matter what they do, they can’t seem to break free from recurrent depression, major ups and downs in their mood, and significant difficulties in their relationships. All they want is to feel more peace within themselves and in the relationships that matter to them the most. They want to be able to live life on their terms, and yet, this keeps on eluding them, even though they might be really accomplished in other areas of their life, like work.

Many people feel disconnected, floating through life looking okay on the outside while suffering silently inside. This masked lifestyle causes great distress on the mind, body, and spirit resulting in varying symptoms such as depression, isolation, anxiety, disordered eating, relationship issues, body image disturbance, health problems...etc. Psychotherapy can be a place to help people achieve their life goals, make life changes, move through difficult transitions or better understand ongoing relational concerns. Offering a compassionate and collaborative environment, I can help you develop coping strategies that promote acceptance, healing, and the creation of a more meaningful life.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
