I provide services to teenagers, adults and families and have over 20 years of experience as a psychotherapist. I approach therapy from an integrative theory of psychotherapy, blending different approaches and modifying treatment based upon your unique needs. I believe that therapy is a collaboration where we examine your concerns with curiosity and without judgment. I work with people who are seeking to improve their relationships with others, searching to heal old wounds, or struggle with depression, anxiety, or trauma. I also work with children and teenagers who struggle with their emotions and behaviors.

When things are difficult, it can isolate us, drain our emotional reserves, and limit our ability to look at things in new ways. I work to help clients appreciate the depth of their experience, and support them toward personal strength and healthier relationships. My style is open, collaborative, direct, and supportive. I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years in private practice. I also served as adjunct faculty at the University of Rochester's Counseling Center for many years.

Not accepting new clients
I'm not currently accepting new clients; however, I'm happy to refer to another clinician with openings at my trauma-focused group practice, Sustainable Wellness. I believe we all have the potential to better ourselves, and that growth occurs while exploring the root causes of issues - not just treating symptoms. I have a holistic approach, treating the entire person rather than a disorder or specific hardship. I view my clients as experts on their own lives and my role as the facilitator of change. I help address my clients' struggles while, equally importantly, maintaining areas of strength.

Not accepting new clients
We have other clinicians at Sankofa Family Counseling who are accepting new clients. Being here, indicates that you are committed to helping yourself, or a loved one. I work with children and adults to sort through past and current challenges. I help my clients integrate these experiences so that they are manageable. My approaches and insights are adaptable for the age, cultural, and spiritual identity of the person or "persons" sitting in front of me.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
