Clients benefit from my psychodynamic training to become aware of how the past might influence the present.
Do you feel stuck, upset, frustrated, scared or confused? A troubling combination of these feelings? People often call me when stresses in their lives have increased, they're having difficulty coping or are experiencing uncomfortable levels of anxiety, depression or confusion in relationships, disappointment in self or others, work difficulties, or problems adjusting to loss and other life changes. In the context of a respectful, warm and trusting therapeutic alliance, I work with individuals and couples to empower them to build skills necessary to explore, fully experience and productively weather the emotional storms essential to a worthwhile and creative life.

I am trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Psychodynamic Theory, and Attachment Theory and use a combination of training and experience to support your specific and individual needs.
As your collaborator, my focus is on your strengths, your challenges, and your goals. You may feel stuck and not sure how you'll navigate a transition such as the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, an alarming diagnosis, or a career disruption. Together, we will work to move away from negative patterns that limit your growth and move towards greater self-compassion. My job is to create a place where you can express your full range of emotions in every session. While tears in therapy may be expected, do not discount the healing power of laughter.

My style is relational and incorporates elements of psychodynamic (insight oriented) and cognitive behavioral therapy (skill building), as well as Internal Family Systems (IFS) principles and mindfulness.
I have been most effective in working with individuals who feel that their relationship struggles, mood issues, anxiety and/or trauma are holding them back from living the life they want to live. I work collaboratively to establish a treatment plan that is unique and tailored to each individual. Together, we will engage in insight oriented work to understand the root of the problem, as well as skill building to learn coping skills that will help alleviate distress in the here and now. In my experience this is what leads to both symptom relief in the short term as well as deep long lasting change.

Welcome. My work is to help you find more ease, joy, connection, meaning and purpose in your days. Emotional suffering is part of being human, but it is possible to face challenging life situations with a clear head and an open heart. We can cultivate trust and hope in the face of traumatic personal histories and loss. Wouldn’t it be nice to let go of fear and anxiety, as well as the old stories that still have a grip on you, to stop repeating self-defeating patterns and find a place at the clearing for something new?

While I work with a variety of people, many of my clients are students or young professionals who are struggling with self-confidence, productivity, and relationships. My typical client has many wonderful goals but can become easily overwhelmed by perfectionist tendencies. I help people explore current difficulties while also connecting these problems to past hurts or losses. Throughout our work, clients are also able to build concrete skills, allowing them to feel less anxious, more like themselves, and more connected in their relationships.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
