Are you wanting to understand yourself or your partner better? It can be a very lonely and isolating experience to struggle with the conflicts that arise in life. Sometimes these conflicts come from within and other times they result from the relationships that we find ourselves in. Learning to address these issues can not only be satisfying, but enriching as well.

I use a psychoanalytic approach which relates to both the psychological and spiritual dimensions of life on an integrative path to healing.
"The greatest and most important problems of life are all fundamentally insoluble. They can never be solved but only outgrown" (Carl Jung). There are times in our life's journey where the path becomes difficult to traverse: depression, anxiety, and problems in our relationships can obstruct the view. Struggles with our circumstances, managing anger, coping with workplace stress, and existential questions are common challenges we face in life. I welcome the opportunity to journey along aside you in these challenges and together discover a richness that has been waiting to be revealed.

In psychodynamic treatment, we enter a journey together to understand behaviors and feelings that just don't make sense; to Prevent the Past from interfering in the Present; to improve personal relationships; to change lifelong ways of coping that don't work; and finally to stop self-destructive behavior patterns. Please consider our work together an adventure in life - and not that of a "sick" patient with an all-knowing doctor! I welcome you to make an exciting journey with me that promotes self-understanding, a internal sense of peace, and the feeling of being comfortable in your own skin.

These are unprecedented times that challenge all of us. As humans, we perceive uncertainty as a threat, which can lead to anxiety or depression in otherwise healthy individuals. In my practice, my associates and I focus on attachment and trauma as root causes of anxiety and depression. We go beyond symptom relief to help our clients understand how they came to be anxious or depressed and what to do about it.

In the last year, I completed my training in a 3-year certificate program from the Psychotherapy Study Center in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
The desire to be known, and to know oneself, is so very human. Working together, we can make sense of your internal experience as it relates to - and makes contact with - the external world. The therapeutic relationship is unique and collaborative. The deeper answers we seek are in the unconscious, hard to access in everyday, waking life. A safe and reliable space provides the conditions to understand your deepest motivations in starting the work known as therapy. Humor, when appropriate, can expand our perspective.

The postgraduate psychoanalytic training I received, which included more than 300 hours of personal analysis, has well-equipped me to provide you with a safe therapy setting free of judgment or bias.
Psychotherapy can help you work through emotional issues, resolve relationship problems, improve your family life, and find more satisfaction in your work. Taking the time to explore the underlying reasons that contribute to your symptoms will help you work through emotional conflicts that are holding you back from having a balanced, fulfilling life.

I specialize in a relational psychoanalytic approach that is culturally informed and emphasizes equality and genuineness between me and my clients.
As a psychoanalyst, I believe most of our fundamental struggles relate to patterns in our relationships and societal pressures we can't easily see or understand. I collaborate with my clients to help them use their curiosity, talents, and strengths to resolve confusion and achieve understanding and relief. My style is non-judging and genuine so clients feel comfortable talking about parts of their lives that are stressful, frustrating, and even painful. In therapy, I help clients achieve a better sense of meaning in their lives and satisfaction in their relationships, so that anxiety, depression, shame and guilt ease away.

To this end I have completed foundational training in Sensorimotor Therapy for trauma, a somatic psychotherapy, as well as a three-year training in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, a modality which combines psychoanalytic insight and depth with a focus on our bodies and emotions.
I see therapy as a holistic endeavor. When it comes to creating change, I believe in the importance of our bodies, not just our heads, in the healing process. So many of us have no issues with thinking. We can clearly analyze, and maybe even feel like we overanalyze, our struggles but still feel disconnected from ourselves, our relationships, the world around us. We are much more than our thoughts and I find therapy to be more effective when our full human experience- physical, emotional, spiritual- is also given focus.

I am currently a faculty member of the Greater Kansas City Psychoanalytic Institute.
My training, my experience, and my teaching and supervising have helped me to appreciate and apprehend the many and complex ways in which early experience becomes internalized and structured in one's internal world, and consequently becomes manifested and repeated in the external world of one's life and relationships. It is my goal to provide psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy of sufficient depth, duration and thoughtfulness to facilitate the mastery of emotional problems, the restoration and enhancement of self-esteem, and the fostering of emotional resilience, creativity and self-discovery.

My primary emphasis lies within the psychoanalytic approaches which I believe facilitates the richest understanding of our personality development, our motivations, and what keeps us from realizing our full potentials.
Each of us comes to psychotherapy for different reasons, and while no two psychotherapy journeys will be alike, we all require the same essential conditions of empathy, acceptance, and supportive encouragement to examine our lives with an attitude of curiosity and a creative vision for change. As a licensed psychologist with a wide-range of training and clinical experience, I am committed to establishing a therapeutic relationship that is dedicated toward understanding the circumstances that have brought you to this point in your life and in drawing upon your strengths and resources for taking your life in a new direction.

Board certified and diplomate in psychotherapy with training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
I work in pursuit of a greater understanding of a persons life and mind, everything-feelings, beliefs, memories, dreams and even seemingly irrelevant passing thoughts. Emotional healing takes place in a safe space through the empathic work of a committed relationship between psychotherapist and patient that is radically individualized/fully confidential. My approach is with the concern of relieving immediate symptoms and resolving current life problems. Patients are encouraged to talk as freely as possible in an environment that can enhance their awareness into how they see themselves and the world around them with increased sense of freedom and validation.

Currently, I'm in training at the Institute for Relational Psychoanalysis of Philadelphia and can offer relational psychoanalytic supervision and psychotherapy.
If you feel stuck, ruminative, or disconnected from your own life, and are seeking an engaged and examined life, psychotherapy can help. I deeply enjoy empowering my patients to know themselves and those around them with greater nuance, depth and honesty. Rather than labeling symptoms in a medicalized, detached way, I work to help patients negotiate complex relationships with themselves and those around them. By identifying patterns and the ways we find ourselves "stuck", psychotherapy can help disentangle these impasses, offering a freer way of being in the world.

Before consulting a professional, most people have already addressed their difficulties as well as they can – but they can only deal with what they know. What they typically need help with is the parts of their struggles they are not aware of. The treatments that help most to bring hidden matters to light, and under conscious control, are based on psychoanalytic principles. As a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, I try to understand people from multiple points of view. I work with my patients to help them get as clear and comprehensive a picture as possible.

I am attuned to the individual aspects of each person, moving fluidly from psychoanalytic psychotherapy to supportive therapy to mindfulness-based techniques, depending on the unfolding needs of each client.
I am a therapist deeply committed to addressing all the issues interfering with your life. These may include trauma, feeling unlovable, or difficulties in your relationships. Together, we will seek resolutions for issues currently facing you while exploring and understanding significant events/relationships in your past. This exploration is essential, as experiences in your past directly and powerfully contribute to the present. This path of therapy leads you toward a greater capacity to realize your true potential and a greater capacity to engage in and experience joy in your relationships. Most importantly, it is the path toward revealing your own capacity of transformation within you.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
