If you are moving through a difficult transition or wanting to tend to the deeper psychological aspects of past traumatic situations or persistent addictions, my work can help you. My training is based in a psychoanalytic perspective coupled with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and a genuine appreciation for sexual, cultural, and spiritual diversity. A psychoanalytic view suggests that current problems may be sourced in unconscious patterns, often rooted in the past, that would benefit from attention and understanding. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy helps reduce addictive behaviors and anxiety through the practice of gentle self observation and present moment awareness.

People come to see me for a wide variety of reasons, but almost always, they feel stuck in some way—whether from difficult or volatile relationships, overwhelming thoughts and emotions, addictions, or the effects of trauma. I work with adults of all ages, kids, and couples, to figure out what’s keeping them stuck and unhappy, and to help them in getting freed up to live life in new ways. As a psychoanalytic therapist, I can help you cultivate a more integrated and accepting awareness of the different parts of your life, yourself, and your present experience. Our work together would be unique, based on you as an individual.

I believe it is natural for humans to want to change how they feel. Unfortunately, how we seek this change can determine the difference between healthy vs. unhealthy behavior. My work is guiding you through an in-depth exploration of how early experiences have shaped your sense of self and how you manage feelings. My goal is to help you develop both a compassionate view of these experiences and a more secure sense of self. In addition to Dual Diagnosis, I work with actors/artists/writers/entertainment professionals, gay men navigating mid-life, and adults who have experienced sexual abuse.

As a psychoanalyst following Jacques Lacan's return to Freud, I adhere to an analytic ethic which makes a space for the uniqueness and singularity of your unconscious. What is repeating itself in your life and in search of a space and a time for speech? What is insisting, seeking a way out, and resistant to other approaches, treatments, and therapies? The session affords a place and a time for you to speak freely, and my desire to know supports and welcomes what is at stake in the suffering you bear in the singularity of your life context.

I am a psychoanalyst, certified EMDR therapist, and IMAGO couple's therapist. I work with individuals and couples (gay and straight) on everything from complex trauma stemming from childhood and PTSD, to relationship ruptures both personally and professionally. Couples' work allows couples to move from blame and reactivity to understanding and empathy, so they can create a deeper and more loving connection with each other. I also work with clients dealing with depression, anxiety, and career challenges. As a former TV anchor and journalist, I understand the inner workings of the entertainment/news industry.

I became a psychotherapist as part of an overall commitment to exploring the many different paths to healing and wellbeing. My style is warm, collaborative, flexible and respectful. The goal is to have the best possible experience of living. We cannot accomplish that by rewriting our history, yet together you and I can engage in a process where we understand what your past means to you and the impact it has on your current behaviors and relationships, in order to make space for new meanings and new responses to things and a better experience of living.

I work with men who are ready to face themselves, their past, present and future with courage and honesty; men who are prepared to take a closer look at their own reflection. In the pursuit of better answers about ourselves we cannot underestimate the power of asking better questions. I'm a proactive collaborative partner toward growing, expressing, exploring or resolving what you bring into therapy. A quote that symbolizes our work is "Once there was a man who was afraid of his shadow. Then he met it. Now he glows in the dark."

I truly enjoy working with clients who are seeking understanding of themselves and wanting to create some change in their lives. I also understand that true intimacy is created from the client-patient relationship, therefore it is tantamount to find the right therapist that you (the patient) feels safe/comfortable enough to say anything that is needed in order to illicit insight/change. I ask that all my clients outline specific therapeutic goals so that together we be clear as to our purpose and stay the course of treatment. I am client-focused and open to feedback since treatment is made for the client.

Feelings, feelings, feelings. They can be complex painful, rewarding, and sometimes, confusing. Sometimes those feelings and emotions consume us, other times we avoid them either way; they affect us. In this space, I hope to help guide your understanding of what you are experiencing. To acknowledge triggers, and normalize some of your behaviors without excusing them. In all, my goal as a therapist is to create an environment where you feel listened too and important .

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
