I work collaboratively with clients from a relational, psychoanalytic perspective and view the therapy relationship as an opportunity to explore, bring awareness to, and transform patterns of relating to others and oneself. I remain curious, open, and engaged with my clients, whom I view as the authorities on their own lives.

In addition to the education and training I received at Northwestern, I have completed both a fellowship and a 3 year course of study in Adult Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis.
Whether you're dealing with a new crisis, or have been struggling for a very long time, therapy provides insight and self awareness which can help lead to a healthier and more satisfying life. I provide therapy for adults and adolescents wanting to explore a variety of concerns and issues including anxiety disorders, OCD, depression, trauma, panic disorder, and grief and loss. I am passionate about my work and consider it a privilege to be of help.

I provide therapy for individuals and couples, specializing in relationship difficulties. My particular interest and expertise is working with people suffering from anxiety, depression and trauma. I use a psychoanalytic approach with an emphasis on genuine connection and empowerment. This is helpful to bring understanding and insight to past experiences, that may be impacting one's behavior, feelings and patterns, allowing them to remain stuck. I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship and am deeply committed to a strong working alliance with each of my clients, resulting in effective treatment and authentic change.

I practice contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy. I aim to foster an environment where new understandings about oneself can emerge. When this happens, links between current difficulties and adaptations made (sometimes unconsciously) in order to cope with past challenges can become apparent. Through our conversations, you might come to see how what once worked to solve a particular problem in your life is proving less helpful now. This process of discovery can provide symptom relief and also greater capacities for choice and change. My approach is one of curiosity, compassion, attention to emotional safety, and collaboration.

I have received extensive training in psychoanalytic theory, child and adult development and technique from the American Institute of Psychoanalysis.
People who seek psychotherapy feel stuck and stressed. Psychotherapy is an emotional learning process which takes place between a therapist and a client. Within this joint endeavor, the therapist's role is to actively listen and offer interpretations/suggestions. The client's role is to be as open as possible about his/her feelings and life situation and to engage with the therapist in a productive dialogue. The mutual goal is to facilitate the individual's self knowledge and arrive at a new understanding about the presenting problem, thereby freeing up the person to resolve the difficulty and become happier.

My work is psychoanalytic, which means I attend to feelings/beliefs that emerge from one's lived experience/history and that interfere with living fully, creatively, and freely in the present. I believe that psychotherapy, at its best, is a deeply transforming experience that emerges within an intimate and private space in which you are listened to, understood, and responded to with intelligence and compassion.

My practice orientation is psychoanalytic and is focused on the growth of the personality.
Feelings of depression and anxiety, or family and work conflicts can become overwhelming. Talking about your thoughts, feelings, dreams and experiences during the therapy hour helps relieve emotional suffering and increases your capacity to tolerate and manage difficult feelings such as anger, panic, grief and a sense of isolation.

As a kink-aware therapist and one that has experienced with polyamory and consensual non-monogamy, I hope to provide support to marginalized communities that face stigma, or that feel left out. I care deeply about social justice and work hard to dismantle oppression, as a vocal LGBTQ+ and feminist ally. As someone that became a therapist later in life, I apply my diverse experiences to my practice so that I may be more able to help you along your unique journey, or to uncover and address barriers that may prevent you from meeting personal goals or living a more authentic life.

Are you in a relationship that you want to leave? Do you long for a relationship in your life but you can't seem to find the right person or act in a way that brings out your best self? Are you feeling down on more days than you are feeling up? Perhaps we should talk. The first step is the hardest, picking up the phone and asking for some help. A courageous act which I so respect and understand, but the necessary first step in the journey towards feeling better. Often you will feel better for just having done that for yourself.

(She/Her/Hers) Over the years, I have built a practice devoted to improving the lives of people from a wide variety of backgrounds, struggling with a number of different issues. More recently, I have shifted my focus from clinical practice to the training of pre-licensed and early career therapists. I very much enjoy mentoring as it gives me the opportunity to share all that I have learned in my two decades of providing psychotherapy.

When we are in pain, we lose a sense of wonder. Our mind feels like a prison instead of a space to discover. The future looks as bleak as the past and painful as the present. The pain is a signal inviting us to understand something about our inner life.

Life can be stressful and overwhelming. Feelings of anxiety and depression can occur during challenging times. We all have unique identities and ways of expressing ourselves, and we all view the world and our roles in it in distinctive ways. Non-judgmental, open-minded conversations within the context of a trusting relationship can help. Connecting with someone who can relate to your perspectives helps relieve stress and paves the way to lasting, meaningful change.

As therapists, we work to build a genuine relationship with each client, create a safe space for discovery, and aim to understand that individual. This allows clients to safely explore alongside the therapist, and begin to see themselves with greater clarity, depth, and honesty. Good, effective therapy will likely not happen overnight (though exciting and wonderful eureka moments certainly occur along the way), and trust, honesty, and humor are invaluable to a beneficial therapeutic relationship. We believe that laughter and tears are equally powerful but that therapeutic change is measured in neither.

I think I work best with clients whose goals are both large and realistic: working with depth enough for deep healing and growth, but with an eye to the practical, and with clear communication back and forth. Clients who need to tackle embarrassing, painful and difficult issues may appreciate my gently direct, understanding and non-judgmental approach. Those who have been frustrated with cookie-cutter approaches may appreciate my close listening, collaboration, and inventiveness based on extensive training and experience. I find I work well with a variety of symptoms and presenting problems in adults, children and relationships.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
