I am a clinical social worker in Iowa with over 10 years of experience in the field and 6 in counseling. I have worked with clients on many issues, including anxiety and depression, addiction, family conflict, identity and LGBTQ+ issues. My therapeutic style is casual and based on a mutual exchange of ideas, knowledge, and understanding. I believe all people have the capacity for growth and learning. My approach combines multiple therapeutic modalities including cognitive behavioral, dialectical, trauma-informed, and mindfulness based treatment which I will adapt to fit your specific needs and concerns.

I'm told I have a down to earth approach that is knowledgeable and relatable, that brings laughter and sometimes tears safely into the therapy room. I have a large therapeutic tool bag of skills to choose from to meet your needs and get you to where you want to be. I work tirelessly with marginalized communities, most frequently our children, teens and young adults towards living a happy, authentic life. I believe that therapists should embrace and exercise cultural competency while welcoming a diverse community of clients. I am proud to be part of the clinical team at Psychiatric Associates! I have been helping adults, adolescents, and children achieve their goals since 1995. I have a master’s degree in community-based counseling from Ball State University. From 1997 on, I have been licensed in my home state of Iowa. Currently, my clinical interests include: anxiety disorders, stress management, mood and affect management difficulties, adjustment difficulties, chronic pain, parenting issues, and children’s behavioral issues.

I began my career in mental health working with families who were on the cusp of losing everything, including their children. Oftentimes, the members of these families could no longer find positives in their lives. They felt stuck and often did not believe things could change or get better. This soon became my “why” – to help those on the verge of losing all hope rediscover it. The moments I treasure most have been through the accomplishments — big and small — of those I've been honored to be able to serve. Each moment is amazing!

Hello and welcome to my therapy practice. I love what I do, and I am glad you are here. We all experience periods of turmoil or difficulties and sometimes our inner experiences are too difficult to sort out and understand alone. I have significant experience working with children, through teens, with specialized training in the treatment of adolescent anxiety and Child Centered Play Therapy. I have 30 years experience as a licensed clinician and believe all behavior is communication. Whether it’s a child having meltdowns at school, an angry teenager, or an adult with anxiety – each contains a message that therapy can help decipher. I believe everyone is doing the best they can with the tools they currently have but sometimes that isn’t enough. By collaborating with you, the client, we will look at the bigger picture of things that may be influencing your challenges and make adjustments/learn new tools so that more effective strategies can shine through.

Michelle's approach to psychotherapy is grounded in her belief that the potential for healing and change lies within us all. She combines modern psychotherapy techniques with holistic mental health techniques to create an individual approach to healing to support client's experiencing anxiety/depression/grief and loss/trauma and life adjustments.
