I use client-centered, feminist empowerment, and cognitive-behavioral methods.
Therapy is a place to feel heard, understood, and to collaborate with a professional who can help you reach your wellness goals! My office in Brighton is a safe, welcoming space where you can process some of life's most important events. Through talking and processing, you can gain new insight and make meaning out of life's struggles. Therapy is a great place to find those aha moments! It is also a place to heal from circumstances that are not your fault, and to learn and practice healthier coping skills that can move you forward.

My training is primarily within psychodynamic therapy, but I draw heavily from the feminist, humanistic, and interpersonal traditions.
Warmth, genuine connection, and empathy define my approach to therapy. I believe deeply in the power of every person's life story as a tool to educate, heal, and connect with others. I am committed to providing therapeutic care that promotes introspective growth and engenders self acceptance. I work from a psychodynamic perspective, focusing upon maladaptive patterns of thought and behavior and encouraging insight to understand the root of such patterns. Above all, I hope to help patients feel safe and understood in a non-judgmental environment.

I practice psychotherapy utilizing client-centered, trauma-informed and intersectional; LGBTQ+, kink/Poly+, and gender affirming; Black Queer feminist interventions.
You are just as important to your communities as your communities are to you. This framework grounds the work I do. Western concepts of healing have historically enforced rigid individualism as the ideal way of life. However, I believe that understanding who you are, as both an individual and community member, makes space for your more nuanced, wholesome, and expansive narrative. My work with clients focuses on being present with emotions, navigating individual and collective traumas, reconnecting to your physical body, and empowering healing and joy. I'm hoping for healing and liberation for us all!

I bring a feminist and anti-oppressive lens to my work.
As a therapist, I offer a supportive, compassionate, and non-judgemental space for clients to explore their experiences, thoughts, and feelings. I help them slow down to gain a sharpened awareness of the present, supporting them to make meaning of the past, and open the possibility for healing and desired change in their future.

I work specifically through an integrative orientation with an emphasis on psychodynamic, relational-cultural, existential, feminist, social justice, and attachment frameworks.
Have you been contemplating exploring yourself in a deeper way? Do you feel as though you are being blocked in understanding yourself or working toward your goals? I specialize in helping individuals get to the root of what is going on through self-exploration and gaining insight. I approach my work with individuals through a nonjudgemental, open, curious lens. I prefer to view my clients as "fellow travelers", as we are both on this journey together. No one person is immune to the struggles of human existence. I have experience working with college students and adults. I value the unique aspects that each individual brings.

Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Feminist Therapy and trauma informed treatment, I'll help you cope with mental health issues, teach skills that you can utilize in everyday life, and process past trauma.
I believe that finding an affirming therapist shouldn’t be so hard. Hi there! I’m Shelby (they/them), and as someone who identifies within the LGBTQ+ community, I’m unfortunately aware of how challenging it is to find providers who understand our experience as a sexual and gender minority (SGM). Although everyone’s experience is different, I understand what you are going through, how you’re feeling and some thoughts that have crossed your mind. Together we’ll problem solve, explore thought patterns and you’ll receive support.

I approach therapy from anti-oppressive, feminist, relational-cultural, and internal family systems lenses (can share more about what this looks like in a free consultation).
Emotional distress is too often pathologized when it's a reasonable response to the oppressive systems in which we live. Instead of trying to "fix" you or help you not feel any difficult emotions, I believe that all feelings have information, and we have the power to find out what that information is and choose what to do with it. I would aim to support you in strengthening your capacity to feel difficult feelings, to treat all parts of you with curiosity and compassion, and to determine what information your feelings are holding so that you can feel more connected to yourself and make choices that align with your values.

I operate from a feminist perspective and enjoy empowering women and girls to achieve all that they are capable of.
You've just taken the first step towards advancing your own personal growth. It can be difficult to address the painful or uncomfortable matters in our lives, but it is the only way to propel ourselves forward; to make the future stronger than the past. While the past will always play a role in shaping our future, it doesn't define it. Through counseling, we will work together to identify and overcome whatever obstacles may be in your path. With a clear mind and an empowered spirit, you'll be on your way to living a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life.

My work is informed by attachment, neuroplasticity, and relational theories from a feminist perspective.
I believe in searching for the resilience in each person. Beginning therapy can feel like entering unknown territory. I have a warm, interactive practice that includes the following: problematic life changes, depression, adoption issues (both child and adult), work issues, social competence, relationship issues, recovery issues, trauma, anxiety and aging issues. I have a special feeling for those who are dealing with anxiety, and use meditation frequently. I am also able to assist with creative blocks regarding writing and other arts.

At QuIPP, we are queer, non-binary, depth-oriented, feminist, and trauma-informed. Our therapeutic approaches include CBT, DBT, and psychodynamic and we seek to explore the deep impacts of others (familial, peer, and social) on the minds and spirits of our clients. Our clinical areas of expertise include: gender & sexuality, trauma, transition related support, and poly/kinky & sex positivity. Given that trauma and emotional pain often originate within relationships, we take a relational (and deeply compassionate) approach to therapy.

I work mostly with adolescents and emerging adults looking to address anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, and codependecy/relational challenges. A big focus of mine is helping my clients foster a sense of independence and autonomy as well as learning interpersonal effectiveness skills. As a queer therapist myself, I love working with members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

My approach is grounded in psychodynamic theory, but I often draw from other modalities like accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP), mindfulness, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and feminist therapy.
As a therapist, I enjoy watching my clients grow in compassion for themselves as they move towards more fulfilling lives. I find myself deeply privileged to witness my client’s journeys and am inspired by their resilience. I work with clients on issues of emerging adulthood, identity, race, acculturation, issues around one's sense of self, complex trauma, and emotion regulation.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
