Are you a self-aware person who, despite all that awareness, still feel "off?" Still feel anxious, irritable, or depressed? Maybe you've done therapy in the past but it didn't work for you. If you find that you are struggling in interpersonal relationships or with family dynamics, I could be a good fit for you. If you are ready to do the work, to learn to sit with the discomfort that change can often bring, I could be the therapist for you. I enjoy working with early and middle-age adults, first-generation immigrants, and new parents/postpartum mothers.

Struggling with a life transition, relationship issues, anxiety, or any challenging human condition? Sometimes we all need a little extra support that can offer a safe space as we explore change and growth. Life's challenges and struggles should not be something we are expected to trudge through alone.

You are hard wired for connection. No matter the story you learned during your ‘how to human’ lessons-your brain literally needs deep, meaningful connections with other humans. And by being on this page, you and I both know that something you have learned in your journey up until this point is now in contrast with some vital aspect of your life and you are experiencing conflict. And this thing, this person, this job, whatever it is, it motivates you enough to think that perhaps there really could be a different narrative. And that hope, inspires you to wonder what I, Kristen Sanchez, could do to help.

What does it mean to "take care of your mental health?" It's easier to tell when you aren't taking care of it: chronic stress, exhaustion, worry, and panic are all signs your mental health is suffering. If untreated, you could start having nightmares, poor health, trouble in your relationships, and difficulty staying on top of work or school. There are many things that can lead to mental health struggles, like a too-busy schedule, a chronic illness or someone else's troubles, a major life transition, or a death of someone close to you. Or, it could seem to come out of the blue, caused by nothing at all.

We all have a unique story. One that has highs and lows, things that bring us joy, and things that have caused challenges, grief, and heartache. A desire for a life of abundance is written on our hearts. But sometimes our stories include hurdles and barriers that get in the way and keep us from the peace we long for. We often try numerous remedies or try to overcome these barriers on our own. But we aren’t meant to walk that road alone. It is my job as a therapist to create a space of safety, trust, and respect, so that you can explore, unpack, and make meaning of your experiences, and create the change that you want for your life.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
