If you've ever felt like you "should" be happier, doing more or coping better, I can help. I work with high-functioning adults and teens who are feeling stuck and at the mercy of depression and anxiety, but are ready to move forward and make sustainable changes. I have specialized training in perinatal mental health, including postpartum depression and anxiety, and practice trauma-informed treatment, including EMDR. We'll work together to rediscover your authentic sense of self, learn tools that help you navigate challenges, and live your life more fully. You don’t have to face hard things alone.

I work with people challenged by loving someone who is addicted to alcohol, sex or drugs, or challenged by the life transitions of marriage, pregnancy, new parenthood, parenting adolescents, divorce and death of a loved one.
Marriage can be extremely challenging, especially if your childhood was less than ideal. I help couples learn to listen to each other and talk about difficult issues without being triggered by past events or experiences. These reactions can cause defensiveness, or result in attacks on, or withdrawal from, the other. I help change these patterns, facilitate productive discussions and help you get the love and closeness back in your marriage. Couples can heal, become stronger in their bond and rejoin in love even after an affair or infatuation. I have 29 years of experience as an insight-oriented psychotherapist working with individuals and couples.

Finding the right counselor is like dating--you have to have chemistry, and someone you just "click" with. Building a solid, trusting, professional relationship is key, and I take great pleasure and pride in forming these connections with my clients. Whether you are dealing with a major traumatic event, or just need extra support, we can figure it out together. I like to say, "I will help give you the map, but I won't drive the car". I love empowering clients to make their own change; there is no better feeling on either side.

I approach therapy with an authentic and genuine presence which can include humor and assertive observation/reflection. Research shows that among the top factors determining “success” in therapy, is the therapeutic relationship. This aligns with my beliefs regarding therapy and I strive to foster a safe, trusting space to collaboratively explore your internal and external world, identify patterns that no longer serve you and enact coping strategies to create lasting, positive change. My professional experience includes work in residential and outpatient settings with adults and youth.

I work with bright, thoughtful people with complicated lives. Many are the adult children of difficult parents, people-pleasers, over-thinkers, highly sensitive, or therapists themselves. Their challenges include life transitions, relationship problems, and questions about who they are and what they want. I trust each client's sense of what is most important to discuss, and I use client feedback and responses to learn what specific approach best suits the client's needs. My general way of working is conversational, warm, and collaborative, and I see my clients as the true experts on their experiences.

At some point in our lives, we all need someone to help us work through issues, talk things out or give us a nonjudgmental perspective. It is such a gift to be that person through therapy. I take pride in working with adolescents and adults as they navigate life stressors, trauma, relationship challenges, anxiety and depression, or serious mental illness.

Life is complex. Sometimes everything is going well and things make sense, and other times we feel lost and confused. If you are currently seeking therapy, you may be feeling symptoms of emotional distress due to any number of things such as: intimate partner relationships, illness, grief/loss, or life transitions, etc. The hope, however, lies in knowing that you are not alone. As your therapist, my intention is to create a non-judgmental, safe space to help you process difficult thoughts and feelings. I rely on using a compassionate, strengths-based approach that acknowledges that you are at the center of your treatment.

I believe we all possess innate strengths and have the potential to thrive and live meaningful lives; however, sometimes we get stuck. Major changes, life stage transitions, and stressors can become overwhelming, exceed the ability to cope, and prompt individuals, couples, and families to seek outside support. These times also hold potential for healing and growth. I use a non-judgmental, culturally sensitive, attachment, and systems lens to view and explore issues impacting the person, couple, and family; and collaborate to explore possible solutions. I work with children, adolescents, and adults of all ages and in all life stages.

In my years of experience treating trauma, substance misuse, codependency, relational issues, & other mental health challenges, I've seen the shame, self-blame, confusion, frustration, loss, & hopelessness that come with difficulty coping. For some people, it can be frightening & difficult knowing how to support loved ones who are having mental health challenges, whether it is a parent, child, spouse, sibling, or friend. I recognize a desire to feel safe, understood, & to develop better coping skills that help with overcoming challenges & restoring self-esteem, confidence, meaningful relationships, well-being, & grace.

We are complex; we get to go through iterations of ourselves. It's a healthy part of being human. My job is not to judge you but to make space for your next iteration. In our lifetimes we get to be messy and beautiful; kind and mean; complicated and simple. We get to change. That doesn't mean it's easy. I'm a straight shooter who will tell it like I see it and challenge you compassionately when necessary. You're not "too much" for me. I see your challenges as coping skills that are no longer working rather than deficiencies. I'm client focused and I allow you to set the pace, flow, and tone. I meet you where you are.

You're a woman who wants to understand herself better: how you're showing up in relationships, who "you" are outside of your responsibilities, and what gets in the way of feeling more connected within yourself and with others. Maybe you’ve experienced a significant transition in life, or maybe negative self-talk or relationship struggles are wearing you down. You know life doesn’t have to feel like this, but there is so much on your shoulders these days—it hasn't felt possible to find the time, space, and skills you need to create change. But now you’re ready to move beyond what's holding you back.

If I can be a facilitator in your journey towards a more rich and fulfilling life, it would certainly be my honor. My goal as an LMFT is to look through the lens of the client and provide an environment where one can feel the utmost safety and comfort while dissecting rather vulnerable, personal, human topics. I work with individuals, couples, children, teens, and adults to find clarity in their own lives and enhance their mental wellbeing holistically. I am fascinated by the power of the mind and believe that we all have the ability to design it the way we want - to make it a beautiful place. My goal is to hand you the paintbrush.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
