I work with a variety of clients, and have particular training in the realm of sexuality. I especially love working with men who want to discover how to be deeply alive and authentically good in this modern world. People who have been to counselors before tell me they’re relieved to find someone who actually listens to them instead of offering stock answers. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach; instead, I believe that rich, authentic conversations lead to discovery and transformation. I show up with curiosity and a readiness to discover who you are and what brings you alive. (Find more info at www.timcourtois.com)

Way to go about taking the first step to start therapy! Life is crazy right now. It's tough to feel any balance. Stressors weigh on you and may even add to your anxiety and depression symptoms. Perhaps you or your child may be struggling and at a loss for what to do. I can support you to find the best strategies to tackle these stressors and get back to balance despite the things we can't change in the world now. I've spent many years working with individuals to navigate their symptoms to work together to make daily life feel back in balance. I have extensive training and experience to treat the whole person with a mindful approach.

There are good days, bad days, and days that are completely overwhelming. You have never thought so much about your body in your life, and now you struggle with it every day. You remember when you trusted your body. There were times when you felt ill, but you recovered before. Now, your medical team is telling you that there is no going back to how things used to be. You are angry, you are frightened, you are hurting, and your loved ones are, too. Nobody seems to know exactly what to say, or what you need. It feels like a bomb has gone off in your life, and you are sifting through the rubble.

Each person comes to the office with unique needs and deserves respect to be heard and understood. Working collaboratively, I offer marriage counseling, along with many other services such as depression and anxiety treatment. As an Imago therapist, we recognize that conflict is growth waiting to happen. I often observe growth and healing in people and feel privileged to have accompanied many on their healing journey. By caring for them, I am personally stretched and shaped through their suffering and in turn only deepens my compassion for others. In part, this creates my tapestry that I hope reflects Grace in paying wisdom forward.

There are so many different approaches and therapists out there, it can be really overwhelming to find the right fit. It takes a lot of energy and courage to then reach out to a therapist to start this process of recovery. I get it, it's tough, but it's worth it. We all want to get to the other side where we are able to manage the ups and downs the way we envision, but because of negative feelings and events, sometimes we get stuck from making that connection, which is why therapy can be helpful to support moving forward.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
