With over 30 years of clinical experience, Valerie takes a collaborative and direct approach to effectively create a safe space for families who face issues associated with chronic illness, divorce, eating disorders and addiction recovery. Some situations are best handled with traditional “talk” therapies, while other concerns may need more active interventions to modify an unproductive behavior pattern or lifestyle.

If you are exhausted with trying the same thing over and over, I can help. I will help you identify areas and habits that keep you stuck and learn skills to help you move forward. I tend to be direct and honest with clients and encourage feedback from you as we move forward. If you feel something does not work for you, I am open to switching gears toward what you believe will help you. However, in saying that, I too will be honest with you regarding your progress, strengths, barriers, and hesitations or patterns of behaviors that I observe. I enjoy working with clients who are open to joking, humor, and banter.

You may have suffered greatly internally and contemplated making a change. When the time comes, the risk to remain tight in a bud can be more painful than the risk it takes to blossom. If you are ready to improve your self-esteem, or seek healing from trauma, or overcome a depressive episode, or rebuild healthy relationships, I am here to guide and walk with you in your journal of growth and transformation. As a clinical and research psychologist and former assistant professor, I actively incorporate 14 years of clinical experience and research evidence working with children, adolescents, adults, and couples in my work with clients.

My name is Lauren Madon, and I am a licensed social worker. I enjoy working with adolescents, adults, elderly, and military veterans. I like to focus on helping people become more in tune with their authentic selves while identifying behaviors and thoughts that no longer serve you. Some of the areas I specialize in are anxiety, depression, self-harm behaviors, relationship issues, weight concerns/body image, domestic violence, and trauma, including abuse/neglect. When it comes to my clients, I want them to feel seen, heard, and validated because sometimes we just don't get that when it is really needed.

Positive Psychology Therapists

How does positive psychology therapy work?

Positive psychology therapy derives from the work of Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania. He and others developed the field of positive psychology building on humanistic theory. Positive psychology therapy is similar to acceptance and commitment therapy, and it essentially quiets emotional distress through positivity, contentment, and well-being. This therapy does not reduce the individual to symptoms and conditions.

When do I know if I need treatment using positive psychology?

If an individual is overwhelmed by emotional distress and general negativity, they may feel trapped. A positive psychology therapist can help them view their emotions and behaviors differently, and approach life with a better understanding of their positive strengths. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from positive psychology therapy?

The patient may be asked to explore their signature strengths. The therapist will also ask the individual to talk about their goals, which should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Discussing negative experiences and symptoms is important, but so is the exploration of positive experiences. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more positive and fulfilling way. This therapy is proactive and may use forgiveness, gratitude, hope, and compassion to help reframe negativity.

Is positive psychology effective in therapy?

Positive psychology therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with eating disorders benefit from this type of intervention. This therapy encourages the person to reframe their distressed thoughts and move into healthier patterns of functioning. This therapy also aims to move an individual toward what works well in their life. Positive psychology therapy can elicit lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
