The experience of trauma and loss changes your entire world view. Tomorrow no longer seems promised or predictable. The past is no longer just the past; at times, the past feels like the present. The fragility of life and closeness of death is now undeniable. What seemed important to you has changed entirely. Meanwhile, others around you are focused on things that seem petty and material, as they plan for a future they assume is certain. As a result, connecting with others becomes difficult and you can find yourself alone. You can feel like you are an alien on the planet you used to call home.
I am well versed in evidence-based therapies for PTSD and grief, and offer them flexibly. I use a strengths-based approach in which distress sometimes may be seen as a marker of conscience rather than as a problem needing "treatment." My priority is to build a rapport - "a relational home" - where what may seem intolerable can be carried.
You may have depended on emotional numbing, substance use, or other unhealthy coping to manage what otherwise might have been unbearable. The right therapeutic process can assist in recovery from the emotional distress of loss, trauma, and moral injury. Psychotherapy can start a process of healing and recovery.
