I believe that therapy is a time for people to explore and better themselves leading to a more fulfilled life. I work from a person-centered approach meeting the client where they are at, but also utilize strategies from all different practices. I believe that the client is the expert in their own life and needs someone to show empathy, support, and guidance. I approach each session as a unique situation and involves the client in every step.

I am devoted to establishing a strong rapport with clients while recognizing counseling as a collaborative process. I believe it’s important that clients feel safe when sharing their innermost thoughts, feelings, and concerns. I have provided counseling services in a variety of different settings including community mental health and private practice. I am experienced in working with children, adolescents, and young adults with difficulties including self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, anxiety, depression, trauma, and ADHD symptoms.

I believe that humans are inherently resilient but that sometimes we need support to acknowledge our innate strengths in order to thrive. My ideal client is one who acknowledges that there are pieces of their life that need tending to. Whether it's life stress, grief, relationships, or identity, this person is open to the process of walking alongside someone who can assist them in building resiliency and becoming empowered.

Shayna Duval graduated with a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Expressive and Creative Arts from Salve Regina University. Shayna has extensive experience in working with children, adolescents, and their families struggling with anxiety, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, trauma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and academic challenges. Her commonly utilized therapeutic approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy, Mindfulness, and Person-centered Therapy.

My approach to counseling is that I believe in the power of a therapeutic relationship to help overcome many obstacles in a non-judgmental, nurturing, and safe environment for adults, children, & teens. I specialize in integrative, culturally sensitive, person centered psychotherapy services that help clients lead more fulfilling lives. I use Play and Sandtray Therapy in my work with children. Play therapy can provide a child with opportunities to express complex feelings, learn developmental skills and empower the child to grow and heal. I encourage different forms of self-expression such as art and play therapy.

My ideal clients are not perfect. My ideal clients are humans with challenges and strengths of all kinds. My ideal clients are those in need of softness and compassion as well as tough love and confrontation. I can best support adolescent and adult clients that live with depression, anxiety, PTSD, postpartum issues, identity/purpose challenges, and grief. My clients want to feel freedom from suffering. My clients want to learn how to navigate communication and relationships. My clients want to feel joy, to have hope, and to appreciate and love themselves.

My clinical focus is on individuals struggling with depression, stress/anxiety, OCD, substance abuse, adjustment to life transitions, relationship distress, and parenting support. I offer sessions via telehealth/video and in person in our Woodstock location, so that you can participate in therapy from where you are most comfortable.
