I am a licensed clinical psychologist providing brief psychotherapy for individual adults who are struggling with anxiety, addictions (including compulsive sexual behaviors), career dissatisfaction and indecision, relationship conflict, problematic anger, parenting stress, mild depression, and insomnia. I work best with clients who have a clear understanding of their problems, and are strongly motivated to constructively develop, during and between sessions, the skills and resources necessary to achieve their healthy goals.

My therapeutic approach emphasizes the importance of meeting the client and family where they are at and building a connection through trust and understanding. I have experience working with children as young as 5 years old, adolescents, adults and families. I specialize in supporting clients with depression, anxiety, trauma, self-esteem challenges, socialization and attention deficit disorder. When working with adolescents or adults, I utilize a variety of modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Mindfulness.

In a non-judgemental, respectful atmosphere I accompany people along their journey to living richer, more meaningful life. I encourage people to broaden their awareness into their thoughts, feelings, reactions and behaviors to identify strengths and whats working and challenges and how they are getting in the way. Recognizing the the mind-body-spirit connection, understanding healthy and antiquated defenses and increasing capacity for feeling a greater range of emotions at a deeper level is an important focus of the psychotherapy process. Identifying feelings, understanding reactions and learning better, more effective means of communicating with others is integral as well.

My experiences living in Africa, Europe and the USA (moved here in 1997) have fostered my keen appreciation for various teaching, learning, and developmental approaches to counseling/therapy. My counseling style is direct, compassionate and interactive. I believe the most critical aspect of therapy requires a therapist to go beyond just sitting and listening. I believe in establishing trust in order to truly be able to have a positive impact.

The individuals I work with may have a history of trauma, challenging life circumstances or anxiety and depression. Dr. Lanham treats children, adolescents and adults across the Lifespan. He is an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In addition to his clinical work, he teaches Neuropsychological Evaluation to neuropsychology fellows and medical residents. He served 7 years as the Clinical and Research Neuropsychologist at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center site for the Defense & Veterans Head Injury Program (DVHIP). Dr. Lanham utilizes an eclectic approach towards treatment, tailoring interventions to meet the specific needs of his patients and their families.

Asare Counseling Services is a private practice based in the state of Maryland, with 15+ years experience working with varying clients. We provide counselling to individuals and groups involved with intimate partner violence, parenting challenges, relationship breakdown, among others.
