My practice is focused on psychological assessments for people of all ages. A psychological assessment is helpful to determine what is causing problems for you. I specialize in neuropsychological assessments, which include evaluations for ADHD, learning disabilities, head injuries, etc. I also specialize in forensic assessments, which are used to make legal decisions. After many years of conducting psychotherapy, I am currently only doing assessments. For psychotherapy, I recommend Dr. Dara Goldyne, who also has a profile on Psychology Today.

Our quality of life is determined by the quality of our relationships. Whatever your goals may be, change is an inside job, and I'm here to be both a witness and a resource in that complex process. When we can let go of shame and judgments around emotions, we allow space to cultivate more curiosity, compassion, acceptance, resiliency, and joy. When we utilize mistakes as informational gifts we can strengthen and clarify the authentic self. I would like to help you meet this self.

I know that finding the right therapist can be a daunting task. I am particularly helpful for creative, bright and often resilient individuals who, despite their best efforts, are suffering. It may be anxiety, depression, struggles in a relationship, or just feeling "off" that brings you to therapy. I bring a thoughtful presence blended with extensive experience. I enjoy working with clients who are curious, self-aware, and motivated for in-depth work on their concerns. I have worked effectively with graduate students, young and middle age professionals, and individuals searching for more meaning in how they live their lives.

My therapeutic style is warm and collaborative. In my practice, I help clients develop insight into cognitive beliefs and behavioral patterns that no longer serve them. Maybe you’ve been experiencing depression, anxiety, challenges in relationships or you’ve been stuck in cycles that you struggle to make sense of, cannot seem to break. I am passionate about supporting clients through this healing. I meld both cognitive therapies as well as bringing into awareness the mind-body connection, helping clients heal the impacts of these experiences on the body, as it is my belief that focusing on the mind is just one piece to the puzzle.

I have a passion for working with sensitive people who excel in certain areas of life while experiencing dissatisfaction and disconnection in others. I approach my work with great faith in our innate capacity to heal and grow with adequate support and nurturance, and draw from a rich background which includes working in addiction, mental health and trauma, as well as palliative and hospice care. On a personal note, I bring my own experience with parenting children through adulthood, shifting roles across the lifespan, and spirituality to the therapeutic process and welcome individuals & couples facing crossroads in their lives.

I work with kids, teenagers and adults to help them heal from past trauma and develop more meaningful and peaceful lives. I love working with people experiencing major life transitions and finding new ways to approach those transitions with calm and ease. I also love working with new parents as they transition into their role caring for children, as this can often be a life change that brings up challenges experienced in their own childhood. My clients express gratitude that I am warm and approachable in the treatment I provide and help them feel safe, sometimes for the first time in their life.

Are there things that are keeping you from living a life you aspire to? Are there times when you have big plans, and bounce back and forth between feeling totally inspired and feeling totally frozen by anxiety, worry, and self-doubt. Maybe it is struggling with having unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that trigger intensely distressing feelings that are holding you back.

Clients often come to me during a deep life transition of some kind. They are looking for clarity and deeper meaning. They are motivated, and sometimes afraid to change. Issues of grief and death, relationship, career change, loss or aging often show up; a sense of "Who am I? What next? Where am I going? Where have I been?" Many times clients are looking for deeper spiritual awareness, either wanting to renew abandoned practices, or looking for something beyond their past experience. In each case they are looking to connect more directly with life and find methods to do so. They are looking for greater balance, peace and stability.

I tend to work with adults who are navigating difficult circumstances and transitions in their life and are wanting clarity, validation, support, and assistance in terms of learning how to move forward. From my experience unhealthy and dysfunctional patterns in intimate and family relationships become a catalyst for people to seek therapy. Most often it is through these relationships that we learn who we are and what we want and don’t want in our lives. I feel that therapy can be a neutral and safe place for people to explore patterns and dynamics in their lives, look at past familial conditioning that has deeply effected them.

At its best, therapy is a ritual space where you can come to explore your inner world, develop a relationship with your intuition and make meaningful changes in your life. A true healing experience requires the integration of mind, body and spirit — to release the patterns that no longer serve you, and create neural availability for an expanded experience of self. My practice is rooted in the science and art of holistic healing, blending modern depth-oriented psychotherapy with somatic modalities to support you in the pursuit of well-being and more fulfilling relationships.

I see my role in the therapeutic process as an agent of change and flicker of hope. My only goal is to help you make the necessary changes in your life so that you can experience joy, love, abundance, and meaning. I believe that the only way for any of us to heal and grow from the pains of our experiences is with someone who can not only provide an understanding to what we're going through, but help us experience something different. I seek to achieve this outcome with you through a collaborative relationship and instilling empowerment in you.

The body remembers what the mind would like to forget. We are hardwired to record trauma and adverse experiences in our nervous systems. This wiring is absolutely essential for our survival, but it can be interrupted if for some reason those natural responses of fight, flight, fawn, or freeze are not allowed to be fully completed. Essentially, our bodies don't know that we are safe even if our minds perceive otherwise. This can manifest as chronic illness, anxiety, depression. O.C.D. relational issues and a variety of other physical and psychological disorders.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Santa Barbara?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
