My ideal client is a person who has gotten so stuck with emotional or medical challenges that these interfere with their ability to self-soothe, focus, make and execute constructive plans, get along with others or experience intimacy and connection with a mate or other fellow human beings. My ideal client wants to feel wanted and needed and yet may engage in unacknowledged self-defeating behaviors at home, at work or out in the larger social world worthy of inspection and “remodeling.” My ideal client is willing to make a commitment to a process of self-examination resulting in new efforts to make important changes in their life.

Although I specialize in Gottman-style couples therapy, most of my work focuses first on symptom reduction (eg anxiety, depression, trauma) and then more fundamentally on the use of a variety of theoretical and practical treatment frameworks (eg Cognitive Behavioral, Family systems) to help my clients move through pain into enhanced personal effectiveness.

Therapy can be hard. But it does not need to be harsh. I bring to each session a sense of tender kindness, humor and empathy that complement my skills to help each of my clients “digest” and make good use of their pain or suffering in order to live a more fulfilling life.
