As a parent of a kid with trauma, you are fed up with using "traditional" parenting techniques that never seem to work. You feel like you have no idea what you are doing or like a complete failure as a parent. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you need a break. You’re ready to use parenting strategies that get you compliance without screaming . You’re ready to connect to your child and yourself in a new way. Most of all, you’re ready for your relationship with your child to grow, deepen, and flourish.

My experience includes work with college students, pregnant and parenting teens, in-home counseling in rural and urban areas, counseling at an eating disorder treatment center, and short-term crisis counseling.
A counselor is a client's true ally. Someone who is actively invested in understanding your experiences, emotions, and behaviors can be a powerful tool in helping guide you toward change. The genuine connection between counselor and client can foster a better understanding of self and lead the client to take charge of their own life path. I am honored to be some small part of a client’s journey towards fulfillment. To me, each person's differences make the world a more vibrant place. I hope to celebrate what makes each client unique and also build a connection to what makes us all human.

Are you worried about your child? Struggling with meltdowns, crying, yelling, or even aggressive outbursts? As a parent it breaks your heart to see your child so overwhelmed by their feelings. You know they feel things very deeply, but the dramatic highs and lows are exhausting. You wish they could calm themselves down and cope with big feelings well. Seeing your child so upset makes you feel like a failure as a parent. You worry their behavior keeps them from making friends. You long for peace and harmony in your home. Every book or person has a different idea of how to help. You feel lost and confused on what to do next.

Over 20 years of experience working with children and families in education and ministry. My counseling philosophy is rooted in the belief that when an individual feels safe and seen, they are secure enough to share the deepest and most meaningful stories in their life journey. My therapeutic goal is for every child, teen, parent, and adult I meet to know they have been seen, at the very core of their being. By core, I mean the part of us that makes us who we are in heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit.

Being a parent is hard. Being a Christian parent, to a hurting child, in a secular world, is even harder. Your child, or even you, may be struggling with anxiety or other mental health or behavioral concerns. You want your child to talk to you and tell you how they're feeling. You want to know what to say to comfort them and what to do when they're in a crisis. You want answers to all the questions swirling in your head and heart right now. I can help you answer them by teaching you about powerful, prayerful parenting.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
