I support families, couples, and individuals experiencing issues around life transitions, losses, and grief, depression, anxiety, trauma, relational issues, parenting, the process of deciding and becoming parents, infidelity, intercultural dynamics, integrating cultural and transnational experiences.
As a relational therapist, I am deeply passionate to support individuals, families, and couples as they navigate life transitions and different experiences that impact connection with oneself and/or with one another. I strongly believe in the power of resilience (capacity to recover from any impact) and finding growth in the midst of challenges. I also believe, that sometimes finding the openings for growth are not so visible or accessible to our perception and therapy can support expanding that vision.

The collective grief of the pandemic has left us facing anxiety and pain we may have already been managing before, but it's now magnified by the loss of so much of what we remember having. Emerging feelings can include grief, depression, relationship issues, parenting stress, and even anger. This can leave us feeling isolated and alone as we struggle to wade through the difficulties of our new every day.

Whether my clients are navigating parenting issues, the transition from college to the work place, career changes or grieving a significant relationship I aim to create a space where clients can freely explore the depths of their experience.
Therapy is a collaborative process. I help my clients clarify their goals, and together we identify and explore conscious and unconscious obstacles that keep them frustrated. I utilize insight, cognitive behavioral strategies and techniques based in Somatic Experiencing to help clients work through their difficulties.

Although my expertise is in eating disorders (trained at the Renfrew Center), I have over the years worked successfully in a variety of settings with adults who suffer from anxiety, depression, trauma (sexual abuse, domestic violence), who are struggling with family conflict or parenting issues, and who are seeking to improve their relationship happiness.
With over 25 years of experience working as a Clinical Psychologist, I have learned that pairing a warm and empathetic environment with asking challenging and thought provoking questions is an effective way to allow people to explore their issues and empower them to make changes.

I am proficient in areas of parenting skills.
I work with adults, adolescents, and couples. I am active in my work; I clarify for each person what is important to her. My orientation is psychodynamic; I explore past history connected to the present and open the possibility of finding out who you are, how you arrived here, and where you are going. Crises in development and transition are important, opportunities for change. These are good moments to enter therapy. Times of depletion or feeling stuck are also important moments to initiate change. I'm here to help. It is important that you feel I understand you correctly, as you see yourself.

My areas of expertise include depression, attachment, anxiety, difficulties around intimacy or commitment, postpartum/parenting issues.
Often people enter therapy frustrated and confused about parts of themselves acting in ways they don't understand. Why can’t I stop drinking? Why am I eating when I am not hungry? Why am having trouble ending a relationship? Why am I bored and unfulfilled? I believe that without extending curiosity towards the parts of ourselves seem to stand in our own way, we will remain stuck. Our frustration and confusion is often internal, not external, and learning how to understand oneself through therapy can often lead to increased clarity, presence, and connection with oneself and others.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
